Not sure why you guys are acting like lag isn't worth pointing out. Also, forgive me I havn't read any of the write ups, but are we getting no input/menu lag info from people actually playing this or are you guys just coming to this conclusion from watching a video?
If you've been playing the game, you would understand that even when you hit an action on the ability bar, it takes a noticeable amount of time before it goes off even when the action bar is showing its recast timer (indicating the action was initiated). And until quite recently, it wasn't uncommon for recasts to be off by upwards of 10 seconds. Also, when Yoshi-P was equipping various armor on his character, the character didn't blink and thus you was able to move on and continue equipping other equipments without interruption unlike the current version. Those two alone shows how lag has been drastically reduced...
Or, what lag should've been from the start. /shakes fist at the original FFXIV development team
Of course, that's not to say it's perfect. As Celeras has pointed out in his earlier (and later) posts, there seems to be some instances where other PC characters around you literally 'skip' frames, which is a problem that can be seen in the current version. Then again, this is the Alpha build. Here's to hoping it gets fixed by the time the final version rolls out. And it better damn well be.
Because they're fanboys, obviously. Other examples of the lag exist between 13:38 and 13:48. The Galka runs in place and then fast-forwards repeatedly, and jumps off the cliff a good 1-2 seconds before the DRG only for the DRG to hit the ground first. In fact, the entire video looks fairly laggy if you focus on the surrounding players rather than Yoshi. Which is strikingly similar to the problem 1.0 currently has on live servers.
And YoshiP is a clicker just like Tanaka was during his presentations, so it's fairly easy to see when things are being input and when theyre being executed. It looks fairly tight during the 30 seconds of combat we're shown, so that's one area of definite improvement. I'd go as far as to say that part is impressively smooth.
However, someones gotta keep shit real round here. It may as well be someone who's actually experienced every ounce of content this horrible game has to offer, rather than the people getting hyped talking about how awesome everything looks, and how "they hope they can kill normal Ifrit done one day!". That way when they try to label me as a 'hater' or a 'troll' for pointing out areas that obviously need work, uninformed gents like yourself have to go no further than the livejournal linked in my sig(that has been devoted to cautious optimism towards this game for the past two years) to see what the score is. Real, unbiased talk. You're welcome.
Yeah we obviously do not play the game and have not completed anything at all. You've heard Celeras guys, this game is coming out tomorrow and will still be horrible, no improvements at all. Obviously someone who hates the game with a passion has the real unbiased view on this all situation, we're just blinded by the pretty graphics and nothing more. Let's go back to our Ifrit training sessions so that we may , one day, finally beat the normal version.
I suppose there needs to be the "bad cop" in every fan base somewhere!
As pessimistic as Celeras sounds sometimes (or realistic, if you so wish), you do need this kind of person to really point out the flaws that should or need to be addressed that everyone else glazes over or doesn't notice due to their love of the game/franchise etc. It is because of raw criticism like that that can improve things for the better.
Of course, there's a thin line between raw criticism and just complaining with no basis. As uh... abrasive as his arguments may be, he does have a point with some of them.
Maybe toning down the "I'm clearly the only guy who knows what's REALLY happening" kind of attitude may help with people not being so quick to lash, but you know, grain of salt and all that jazz.
That was said jokingly, I made it extreme, because you basically always act like that, facts being facts aside
I won't be arguing it's perfect, but there's still time to work on stuff, it's pre-alpha client so I accept that there are flaws. On the other hand right now it's hard to not be excited when they really showed that they did do a good job and seem to be delivering on their promises.
I think what prompted such negative response from that was saying that it was your 'favorite' part of the video. If you had simply pointed out the problems with the video and omitted that 'favorite' part, you would think that no one... or, at least, fewer people would've accused you for having a 'lamp post shoved up your ass', no? Intended sarcasm or not.
Sometimes, it's good to be diplomatic.
...Man, I think I'm already regretting saying that. This is the internet, after all.
And for the record, I do agree with you. Being blind to the problems by being overly optimistic is never good.
It is unfortunate, but your first posts did kind of make you antagonistic, which probably didn't help with wanting your criticism to be taken seriously. Starting a post with "Pretty hilarious how everybodies dick is hard" or "Because they're fanboys, obviously." sort of pits everyone else against you.
You do want to make valid criticisms yes, and that's totally understandable and in fact, encouraged probably. But if you do want for other people to take your word and go "Yeah, I agree with that!", there's always the option of not polarizing everyone by belittling them.
I dunno! A little respect can go a long way sometimes is all. In this case, people might actually see your point of view instead of poking you with pitchforks and torches. Maybe you like being a little bit on the snarky/stingy side, I don't know!
I just hope I'm making some sense here.
best way to take the hard facts route is to throw it out as a question to the floor.
...hey guys! i think i just noticed there were no footsteps effects when they walked through the giant hollow tree trunk area. anyone else notice this?
let everyone see the point you're trying to make and come to their conclusion. not everyone will agree with you, but the point is to highlight the fact, not your opinion/conclusion based on what you see.
i mean, i get your point and all. but you're not unbiased, so don't say you are. thats all.
there's definitely some lag thats visible, but that is to be expected of any online game, and everyone has some tolerance to it. like eg. in D3 I won't be bothered to play whenever my character is rubberbanding because that to me is annoying as hell, but if its a mild lag spike where i freeze for a few seconds and then everything loads i could be ok with that.
the problem with XIV 1.0 is that the server and graphic lag is so bad it has an inhibitive effect on smooth gameplay. based on your video, its easy to see that another character isn't running as he actually is in his own game.. but it doesn't necessarily mean that is a problem for MY enjoyment of the game.
tl;dr on the lag we see in ARR, probably need a hands-on to ascertain how bad it is.
I can see why being consistently unbiased in an FFXIV section would give such an appearance, and I'm sorry that you don't enjoy my presence. Feel free to be excited, because like I already said: the combat aspect of the video was impressively smooth/responsive, and a huge upgrade.
Are we honestly still going with "pre alpha"? This game has been in development for what, half a decade? I honestly don't see this even being a valid point.
Because it is pre-alpha. Alpha should be starting next month or so (and the version of the game shown at GC is not current, it has to be a little older because it had to be prepared beforehand for the show) and Yoshida himself has said he is scared of the presentations because he's worried stuff will go wonky during as there is still a lot of unfinished stuff.
Consistently unbiased... is that what you think you're being? It would be more accurate to say you were consistently antagonistic. I mean no shit there are still issues and concerns, but you aren't keeping it real for the sake of keeping us honest, you're doing it to be a dick and that's why people are being aggressive towards you.
Maybe all you really want to do is keep us honest, but you suck at showing it.
