We need to start a massive campaign to tell YoshiP we want Triple Triad in XIV 2.0
And I mean IN THE GAME, not a separate app like tetra master was.
Waiting for a crystal tower shout? Open your Triple Triad menu and play for drops/gil/items/cards.
I know this is probably a nitpick and I hope someone eventually gets to ask Yoshi-P but I would really like to see one of the bad guys have Kefka's laugh.
Kefka: "Ahem, I have sand on my shoes"
Guards: "YES SIR!"
Kefka: *laughs* "IDIOTS!"

I would throw the force of a thousand flaming dicks behind this. Who's with me to start a campaign to plaster the OF with this idea?
They did acknowledge it. I believe they mentioned this during one of the live letters. Yoshi took proposals from the dev team for a card game that had a good reward vs. effort system. Yoshi turned down all the proposals so far because they weren't good enough or some shit. The quote below is from the 2nd live letter.
Q: Are you looking into implementing mini-games like what is in FFVII's Gold Saucer or Triple Triad from FFVIII?
A: First, in regards to the Gold Saucer, the casino. It's actually among our plans, but it will be further down the track. Player housing is highest priority right now, but we think it might be a good next step. Since it's a casino, there might be certain rules and laws imposed depending on the country you're in. We'll be looking into this, but we do have plans for a little further in the future.
For the card game, it is surprisingly quite difficult to do. With enough resources, we could come up with a fun, balanced card game. But since it's an MMO, people would expect rewards for their efforts. I think it would be difficult to sustain interest in the card game itself, so we need to think about what kind of rewards we can offer.
I've actually received a couple of ideas for card games from developers, but I'm really looking for the perfect one, so I declined them all. I said that if they brought something really good, I'd consider it for the game.
For real man. We've been saying that since the OFs initially opened. I even made that crappy photoshopped image of Triple Triad in game. Such a simple concept:
- Triple Triad. Can play anywhere/anytime outside of combat. Waiting for people to gather for raid? Right click player and select "Triple Triad"
- Can challenge for fun or for keeps. Winner chooses 1 card from your hand. Use the rules in FF8.
- Bosses have a low % of dropping their own card as extra loot (not in place of other loot).
- Normal mobs have slightly higher % of dropping their own card.
- NPC sells booster packs for 150,000. Ten random cards (one of which is decent boss card).
- Achievements for getting a certain % of the cards -> all the cards.
Shit would drive people bananas. I would log in and just play cards in Ul'Dah while waiting on my dungeon queue.... OMFG.
We must've said this millions of times. But Burningthought is right... they want to make something original. ;( lol
Who knows, maybe they'll drop a surprise bombshell on us. It HAS to be on their radar. /hopes
Shit, all they gotta' do is create some sort of weekly cross-server tournament situation with their own ranking system and enough people will go apeshit just for top-tier titles/card/vanity rewards.
It should be a self-sustaining game... no need to even intertwine it with fighting in any way, so you won't have people who hate card games bitching because a good weapon comes from it and you won't have people who love card games bitching because a great card drops from a NM.
I wouldn't mind seeing some vanity items come from it, but I understand where he's coming from. If you look at XI look at all the mini/side stuff they threw in and is pretty much completely abandoned by players. I'd rather them come up with something with a decent reward system so people will have a reason to keep playing it.
Part of the reason why it was so abandoned is how much out of your way you had to go to get started and actually do the side minigames. Traditional card game has none of those features, with all of the benefits. Only shit-tastic aspect is people bitching at playing a hand and losing their card/s to the other player. GM Spam ahoy. Although I suspect this is one of the aspects Yoshi might want to avoid.
The only problem I immediately see that would make the game die out in a relatively short time is the eventual need to add more/new cards to it. However, the mechanics of Triple Triad/Tetra Master leave very little design space for them to add new cards... unless they just keep adding rare foil versions and shit like that to keeps the obsessive collectors busy.
Still... it would definitely be fun to have for all these fucking 15 minute lock-outs.
As for losing cards to players/NPCs, there should be 4 options when starting a game:
- No Bet (casual playing/deck testing)
- Gil Bet (both players put forward an agreed-upon amount of gil, winner takes pot)
- Card Bet (both players offer and agree upon 1 card for ante , winner takes both)
- Winner takes 1 (winner choses 1 of the cards that the loser played in the match)
How about triple triad gear that increases chances for rare cards from boosters, etc.
On the card front, I feel that's a bit of ato say it's that hard. Only 'cause EQ2 already does it. When you first get the game you get an automatic starter pack (cards are account based not character based). Cards randomly drop from mobs as well you can buy packs irl by either a. going to the cash shop they have or b. buying the real cards at a store and inputting the code in the package. iirc you could win cards from other players when you beat them.
Normally it is what you expect, you can hit a button to challenge other players and if they accept it opens up a card game screen. I don't think they ever added any gear for it or special prizes, but it was a great way to pass the time when someone in your pt went afk, so I don't think you really need all that much of an incentive to play it.
[edit] they also had tournament options and play a random player options (incase no one around you wants to play) they had a ranking system based on your win/loses so if you played a random person it would be someone of a similar rank.
I think you gotta make another triple triad post on OF Kuro and we all post everyday until we get a rep response!
It's going to happen.
