Then why is dancing a problem?
As much as I loved MNK in FFXI, there was nothing to it. WSing and autoattacking. 'Course the only really interesting job in that game was Scholar, but there you go.

I think the positioning mechanic in theory is a great way to make fights more interesting than standing in place and spamming abilities, but the way some monsters spin all over the place in chaotic fights like the Moogle fight or Natalan wolf parties or anytime a ton of spell/ability effects go off makes it more luck that you land a combo than skill imo. Combine that with the terrible, shit ass client/server code and you have a game mechanic that's frustrating at best.
They can keep the position requirements but just make it so if you don't hit from the correct position, you lose out on damage/debuff instead of completely killing your combo. Combo done with improper positioning: 600 damage. Combo with correct positioning: 1000 damage. Balance accordingly and you have a system that rewards you being active while not completely killing your combo and leaving you with a thumb up your ass.
But, this change works good too.
I'd like to see some combo positioning expansion.
Add a thief job? Now you have a combo that's only triggered by being behind someone.
Ninja? Maybe there's a combo you can only trigger when you have zero hate.
I fucking hated when my Penta Thrust got paralyzed.
SATA Tachi: Gekko all day every day is all I remember doing back then before the sam inflation.
Believe it or not, I had fun casting refresh and haste at one point (I know right? wtf). PUP is the only job I played in XI that didn't make me feel like a potato. I loved MNK, but unless you were stealing hate and tanking with /NIN it just wasn't fun (and unless you had /WAR it was harder to steal hate or just not appropriate).
Before the big twohander changes during TAU, it was damage varies with TP.
First hit could crit, damage varied with TP back in my day (strokes beard) and LEAVE ME ALONE GODDAMMIT PENTA WAS MY LIFE BACK THEN~!! Penta on a Mamool Ja Asshole for 2.9k, fucker turns to me and either one-shots me with a backflip for 1.4k or I super jump to avoid it. It was War! And I loved it!
/settles back in his old-man rocker.
I stroke my Penta-Thrust-could-return-100%-TP beard.
Friggin' dragoons. Always stirrin' up trouble.
