Since this thread is thoroughly derailed, I present to you an old screenshot of being questionably happy about getting an Assault Jerkin.

Now with 100% more Mezraq for Lucavi! Also dat Barone and Spiked Finger Gauntlets.

Went 0/22 on that shit back in 03... Ose can die in a fire.

    Also some FFXIV news:

Famitsu this week has new details on Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Here they are in tidy, easy to read bullet form, courtesy of Game Nyarth:

The icons in the PlayStation 3 version won’t line up horizontally like in the PC version.
There are up to eight main command UI connection indicators. Regardless of disposition, this looks to be the limit.
In the beginning you can choose eight commands. From there it follows a hierarchy.
It takes some effort to recognize the command you want to execute by the letter.
The way you select targets has evolved. You can now choose on your own from within the target circle.
More information regarding the PlayStation 3 version will be shared at the Tokyo Game Show, which runs from September 20 to 23.
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is due for PC this year and for PlayStation 3 in early 2013.

One of the many things a well designed materia system could have accomplished.

Designing armor is really a double edged sword, the more unique flair you give it the more ridiculous it looks when combined with gear from other sets.

Picture this example: DRG AF body, felt bracers, militia subligar, explorer's moccasins. We've got Blurple spikey metal, tan leather, lingerie, and cheetah skin boots that make for a clusterfuck of ugly (I know AF body isn't that good but AF is the most stylized gear currently, makes for a better example).

I cannot fully appreciate this without a picture. Roeg if possible.

@Kuro I laughed at that! I tried to think of a better term than costumes but I'm tired so that's what I went with.

3/3 on Ose. I never looked up the drop rate so I'm shocked. Thought it was a guaranteed drop. Wasted all my luck in the game probably there.

This does not sound good. The wait to see the controller UI is going to suck, since that's one of the main things I'm waiting to see <_<.

Sounds vaguely like Super Mario RPG, except with the diagonals as well.

tsk tsk, using sanction in the middle lands.

I actually disagree on the point about far-east being done to death.. i mean.. other games, maybe, but the extent of asian-inspired gear in XI basically only extends to samurai armor, ninja gear and martial arts gi, which are all predominantly japanese.
even so, they have yet to explore the kimono and its variants (for mages perhaps), chinese and korean garb (refer to any korean mmo, or d3 wizard).. oh fazheluo is kinda chinese war general garb i suppose.

asian influences can extend to thai, viet, indian and malay influences as well. whilst most of it is probably light clothing, and they don't have to base it entirely off them, theres a lot of stuff they can still work with.

XI recently explored a bit of aztec and egyptian too in vw gear.

I like the majority of XIV designs a lot of better in comparison to XI, and I'm hoping they won't go crazy down the path, they actually have a decent style up until now (and god, there's nothing I'm wanting to see more now than the SMN AF).

XIV gear design is fine to me - its just very boring, which is somewhat expected for low level stuff. But the AF look fantastic, so i agree to that extent.

i do hope you're referring to equipment, because the style of XIV weapons is thematically inconsistent and so unrealistic, with boxing bricks and planets orbiting on a staff, swords that can extend and retractable spears... I mean, yeah.. fantasy game but those seem a bit early since what you're now getting is toy-like not-top-tier weapons looking and feeling fancier than "legendary" ones.
And this is from the same game where a gunhalberd and gunblade were once impressive weapons wielded by antagonists.

Ah yeah, wasn't accounting for weapons, only armors. Although I also don't mind the weapons being a little "fancier" as they are in general not as noticeable (the bricks of death were too much though ).

Well, in that making-of where they talked about making gear, they said it would take them a good 6 months or so to make a full set of gear from scratch.

We got 7 full sets of AF gear, so are you really that surprised? I'm not. I'm sure after the AF gear (+kimono), any new gear they've made has just been reserved for 2.0.

Was it really that bad for everyone else? The pace was perfect whenever I played thief or ninja. I was doing so much shit that I didn't have time for anything else, unless I decided to half-ass it for a few minutes to eat snacks or something.

I always think this. I think if you were playing a class that required some thought in XI's hayday (NIN, THF, COR, RDM etc) then the pace was great. I had barely any spare time as a RDM and when I did, it was great! haha. I think the problem was in mindless DD jobs like MNK and WAR, since then, yeah, there wasn't much to do. But that was the jobs fault, not the pacings fault imo. Skillchains and SATA etc falling out of favour gave DD's even less to do because they didn't have to think about any timing, which made things more boring for them.

I personally like longer battles for default mobs as it makes debuffs etc more worthwhile.

These are the reasons I found Puppetmaster so much fun to play back in the day, as under-appreciated and/or realistically useless as it may have been. I was always busy managing maneuvers and retrieving/deploying/summoning/repairing/etc. depending on what was going on... while most melee jobs were a case of mashing whatever wasn't currently on cool-down and your strongest WS macro each time you had TP.

RDM was boring as fuck unless you main healed a party, then it was way more stress compared to the work everyone else was putting in (which was nothing). There was nothing worse than constant Refresh and Haste cycles as it ate up 90% of your time on RDM. You were busy, sure, but only really busy doing the same 2 things. Doing anything else as a RDM was for the most part situational or just plain luxury.

COR wasn't much better, you spend maybe 1 minute out of 5 rolling dice then you're basically a RNG. And RNG was basically shoot (wait) shoot (wait) shoot (wait) ws.

THF was fun, but SATA WS isn't exactly a complex thing. You hit a couple of abilities and WS and then for the most part you don't (or can't) do much. Regular melee DD pacing and boredom sets in.

NIN was legitimately fun unless you were just dealing damage, then it was like all the other DDs (boring).

Melee DD is wait for 100 tp, buff, ws, repeat. Some jobs couldn't specifically buff their WS and most abilities were on long ass timers which didn't help. The pacing of XI was slow, and I say this only because I know that the slow pacing was intentional. But you compare any job in XI to any job in XIV and you'll see the difference in pacing which I only expect to grow when 2.0 is released.

Most melees in XI could only do 1 WS before having to wait ages to do another. Most melees in XIV can do 1-9 WS in that same time frame.

Man, you were playing COR all wrong.

I guess things have changed but at 75 cap COR DDing in a merit party with a joyeuse was a blast (no pun...actually, yes pun, why not).

Tho now that I say it I guess you wouldn't be able to play that way during most end game events, or at least not ones that mattered.
