Kids emulate ones that are most accessible (with best Youtube videos). I don't recall any kid emulating Maradona, Best, Pele at all apart of those with the same nation.

If there is anyone close to being a "Legend" like you describe, it is Maradona for sure. But it is a different world today, Maradona became Maradona not only thanks to the world cups, but for his amazing work at Napoli. Today's equivalent would be Messi moving to Fiorentina and making it one of the most successful clubs ever.

Today, a player at Messi's calibre would never play in a team like Napoli, became the "god" (In italians and Napoli fans' description) of such a team. The financial power gap is too high for such.

A Barcelona star 20 years ago was earning 3M~/year while a Newcastle star was cashing in around 2.5M. Thus, it was possible for certain players to move to mid-level teams. Playing for Barcelona was more about reputation than financial gain.

Today, it is 25M~/year vs. 4M/year along with sponsorship income.
