Still makes my brain hurt why Chelsea let Drogba go after bascially winning the champion's league for them. All the guy ever did was deliver.

Yeah, not only Drogba, Nicolas Anelka also returned back to Europe (Juventus). He was also playing for the Shangai team.

Drogba settled for less than half of what he was getting paid in China so wonder what made him leave the club other than maybe one last potential European Cup glory.

An unlucky punter missed out on half a million pounds thanks to a referee named 'Friend'.

The Oldham gambler had backed Leeds to beat Tottenham 3-1 as part of a bet on four matches this weekend.

His other three results, including his home town club's stunning 3-2 victory over Liverpool came in.

But he was denied a £506,562 jackpot when referee Kevin Friend blew his whistle in the Elland Road FA cup clash with the score at 2-1 - and the ball on its way into the empty Spurs net.

That decision meant the punter, who staked £3 at a Chadderton branch of Ladbrokes', walked away with £17,055.80 from his 'Lucky 15' Bet instead.

Alex Donohue, of Ladbrokes, said: “The referee ruined our punter’s dream. Seventeen grand is sweet enough, but he was literally a second from having his life changed forever.”

The gambler had backed a scores of Brentford 2 Chelsea 2 (18/1), Leeds 3 Tottenham 1 (25/1), Oldham 3 Liverpool 2 (80/1), and St Mirren 3 Celtic 2 (50/1).

Spurs had thrown their goalkeeper forward for a corner as they chased a last-gasp equaliser.

The ball was cleared to Rodolph Austin whose long-range shot from distance appeared to have made it 3-1.

But Mr Friend had blown his whistle before the ball trickled over the line.

Apparantly he wasn't getting paid or only partially paid. That's what setup the breach of contract with the Shanghai club that allowed him to sign with galatasaray.
However, Shanghai is claiming they will file a grievance with FIFA to block the signing, claiming Drogba is still under contract with them.

I never saw mention of a transfer fee, so it would seem galatasaray tried to get him on a free? Seems weird, I can't imagine Shanghai filing a claim to block the move if they received a fee? But fuck, it's China.

Yep, that seems to be the case, Gala didn't pay a penny for the Chinese club and its extremely unlikely that Shanghai will get a positive response from FIFA.

Sucks for Shanghai, but Drogba was apparently bored with lack of challenge and there were serious problems with payments so, fair deal for both I guess. Excellent transfer for Gala as he'll also be able to play in the CL.

Shanghai was having severe leadership issues and wasn't getting the funding promised to them to continue paying Anelka or Drogba. Both contracts dissolved and they moved on as free agents.
