There's no goals against tiebreak (if goal differential and goals for is the same, goals against is also tied).
In this case, it is individual game result since it's a two way tie, but if there's a 3 way tie, it's actually:
Points earned in games between teams involved
Goal differential in games between teams involved
Goals for in games between teams involved
It's all lining up for a Belgium - USA round of 16... the US' "defend-and-counter" strat might be tricky to overcome, given the difficulties we've shown against Algeria's similar style.
Y'all know what this means, right? This awful thought popped into my head late in the first half ...
I think the odds are good that Ghana knocks us out. Again. Oh how we celebrated the 3 points in our victory over Ghana, in how we finally cleared that stumbling block. It seems the Portuguese decided against playing like a semifinalist in this tournament, and the US has a mere +1 goal differential advantage over Ghana. If the Germans and Americans have a real go at each other, does anyone feel the US would concede only 1 or 0 goals? I wouldn't take that bet. I wouldn't bet on a draw either.
Ghana plays with more strength than the Germans and more finesse than the Americans. If Ghana's strikes are on target, I can see them blasting 2, 3, 4 goals past Portugal. And the Germans will want to run a train on the US to assure advancement to the round of 16.
I can see the Ghanians knocking out the US on goal differential.
Fuck.
Ya'll niggas got robbed lol
Shit coaching from Portugal. They should've subbed Ronaldo going into the second half. He was perpetually offside for most of the game, not allowing the rest of his team to even attempt to mount an offense. And he didn't defend at all, so the right side of pitch was wide open for the entire game, which is why the States got all their chances.
I don't care if that single cross from Ronaldo was gorgeous. He was solely to blame for letting the US get ahead in the first place.
It was like watching Beckham's last world cup all over again. Continually offside, never ran ever, zero defense. Totally useless.
On a Ghana related note. I can see Ghana going through in that group.
If Germany beats the US by 2, and Ghana wins by 1 (or vice versa), Ghana goes through.
Seems like the most likely scenario imo. 3-1 Germany and 2-1 Ghana is kinda how I see it going.
USMNT is the 2013 Spurs
TIL Rooting for a tie when you're behind is nothing like falling into a tie when you're ahead.
I was all set to get a tie from Portugal. Now that we actually got one... fuck.
People said the US wouldn't score a goal. They did
People said the US wouldn't win a game. They did
Someone on this forum said they wouldn't beat Portugal. They came within 5 seconds.
I don't think tying Germany is out of the realm of all things possible.
Im thinking Germany is going to sit on a lead if it gets one and not waste energy trying to bury us by 3-4 goals. A draw also gets them out of the group stage, so a 1 goal lead will be like a two goal lead for them.
I agree with many things you said and also have had similar nightmarish thoughts. That said, the fact remains that if US and Germany draw, they both advance with Germany in the 1 seed. If we can keep it tied through the half, I can see both sides playing ultra conservative because it will yield the best possible outcome for Germany and the US will be happy to advance. Germany is going to advance even if they lose (Ghana or Portugal would have to win by 5+), I hope they play a pretty lax game.
I think US and Germany are gonna advance. US will lose to Germany but Portugal will barely beat or draw Ghana. Puts the first 2 teams through.
Germany should beat the U.S. by 2-3 goals.
But Germany should have beaten Ghana by 3 np, which they didn't.
But the U.S. should have a clean win against Ghana as well, and they didn't either.
I think it comes down to how much Portugal cares, i.e. whether or not they just give up at this point since they'd need to make up a huge goal differential.
They're obviously a good 10-15 ranks lower as a team with Ronaldo hurting, and if you combine that with the frustration and disappointment of them being in a situation where there's almost no chance for them to advance... a 2-0 or even 3-0 Ghana win is completely within the realm of possibility.
the biggest problem is the simple fact that the mistakes the U.S. has been making are the kinds of things Germany just destroys you on
Confirmed: Dempsey scored with his penis.
