I'm sure the ref will end this scoreless tie sometime soon if he feels like it

Two words.. TIM HOWARD #Respect #BelUSA
http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/...at-time-means/
fucking lolSo what is stoppage time?
Here’s one thing it definitely isn’t: the amount of time the ball was out of play during the half. Out-of-play time is five or 10 times as long as the time referees add back on. In the average 2014 World Cup match through Monday, the ball was out of play for 42 minutes and 11 seconds, according to data provided by Prozone, one of several companies that log every play in every match. Yet just six minutes of combined stoppage time were added to the average game. The second half of the U.S.-Portugal game included 22 minutes and 50 seconds in which the ball was out of play — yet no one was expecting the referee to add 23 minutes at the end.
Stoppage time is a joke, and it's hard to respect a sport with such complete nonsense as a crucial element.
You can technically know by keeping track, but the referee has to make decisions on if time is being wasted/lost.Allowance for time lost
Allowance is made in either period for all time lost through:
substitutions
assessment of injury to players
removal of injured players from the field of play for treatment
wasting time
any other cause
The allowance for time lost is at the discretion of the referee.
Most refs will allow a current attack to finish if there's a solid move going forward at the time his calculated time runs out, because it's hard to be extremely precise and easy to find more moments time could be added for.
"Any other cause" is for stuff like when Eden Hazard stomps on ballboys and doesn't afraid of anything. It's not really for stuff like the 5 seconds a ball is out for a throwin, or 30 seconds or a minute setting up a free kick or whatever.
for reference, a ball going out, then being promptly tossed by a ballboy to a nearby player to throw it in or make a corner or whatever is not time wasting and is not added to stoppage time
your ballboy doing this, on the other hand...
as well as time time spent dealing with hazard after, will be added
I guess the ref just has to pay more attention to his sundial.
IT'S FUCKING 2014 USE A STOPWATCH
If you expect me to believe those numbers then you must have a very different definition of what "out of play" is. Ball getting out of bounds and being thrown back in and shit is part of any game. The time doesn't need to be stopped for stuff like that. Theres a reason soccer has 45 min halves instead of much smaller times given to American sports where they stop the time. Its to allow for things like ball going out of bounds and free kicks and goal kicks being taken. The stoppage time is for things like Plow listed above. Things that deliberately take away from the pace of the game like injuries, substitutions, etc.
They do.
How about if you take a 3 minute water break and then 2 minutes of stoppage time are added?
It's a joke, own it. It encourages flopping like you were shot with a sniper rifle and waiting for the magic spray when you have the lead, because the 4 minutes you waste are likely only going to add 30 seconds on at the end. Do that a 5 times in the second half and you can eat up a third of the remaining time.
yeah, that list is not mine, it's FIFA rule 7, sorry should have linked sauce

oh and their ref-teaching powerpoint on it

Oh shit, official FIFA links.
We're done here, Plow wins.
No official FIFA links are going to provide me with information regarding how the players in the game know when it's over. Because they don't know until it's on top of them.
The 45 mins that are part of the half are allowed to use the water break time. I haven't seen a single person flop for 4 minutes that wasn't injured at this world cup. Tell me, have you even watched more than a few games this world cup? I've watched almost every single one. The stoppage time added to every game has been pretty proportionate with the amount of times players wasted with injuries and substitutions and the other things on that list. Water breaks are not on that list but they have made special exception to allow it into the game time FOR THE SAKE OF THE PLAYER'S HEALTH.
They don't need to know the exact. Any player will have a decent idea of it based on how the game has been going.
what? water breaks are specifically supposed to add 3 minutes to stoppage, if there was one where it didn't it was a mistake
It is specifically up to the ref to determine if that's what's happening, and add time or even card you accordingly. It encourages flopping like you were shot with a sniper rifle and waiting for the magic spray when you have the lead, because the 4 minutes you waste are likely only going to add 30 seconds on at the end. Do that a 5 times in the second half and you can eat up a third of the remaining time.
They can ask the ref.
He doesn't have to answer, but in my experience they always would.
Let me ask you this: have you seen a single player look surprised by when a game ended in this world cup?
It's kind of hard to explain exactly, but most serious viewers as well as players can tell you at the very least when the game is about to end after a given play.
