So is it a safe conclusion that "Ultron" as a character won't be finished in this movie alone right? He's just too important a character to wrap up in 2 1/2 hours, so we should expect some sadness in this movie leading up to phase 3?

Bad enough X-Men DOFP just used this trope, it's a lazy way to wrap things up. If Ultron fucks things up, let it stay that way. Leaves the Earth nice and vulnerable for Thanos to show up. If anything, I expected the old 'we beat him!' followed by a screen with Ultrons mug on it in some dusty cellar somewhere, laughing about string. Or floating out in space.

Not that they based the first GotG movie off of an established storylines, but Ultron could very easily shown up in the second one since there's a story in place for that.

Ending speculation

I think they end up going the dumping him in space route. Rumor had it that was in the cards at some point with Hulk and Ultron getting tossed out into space. Would leave Hulk open to a Planet Hulk movie or being found by the GotG in GotG2 giving them a reason to come back to earth in Avengers whatever they decide to bring them in on. I think it's a reasonable way to end it, Ultron is going to be pretty beastly and they may not be able to "kill" him per say. But who knows! That's half the fun of it. Also I think Thanos has been bumped to Avengers 4 or a stand alone Infinity Gauntlet movie not Avengers 3.

I don't know much about MU in general, but I've read that they're changing the Ultron backstory to be something other then Ant-man making him. Probably something like Stark creating him, if all the Stark fighting in the trailer is to be believed.

Pym is Ultron's creator in the comics. The MCU is changing it up a little so that Stark is dad, presumably working off plans Pym left hanging around since Ant Man is definitely getting his own film in July 2015.
