They weren't doing it because of financials, but because they didn't have their own studio for films. But, whatever.

They didn't have any kind of studio because they were in the serious financial shits in the late 90s, which is likely when most of these contracts were done up. They got out of bankruptcy in 97 but they still needed help with distribution for the first few movies until things really got rolling.

The company is a juggernaut now but was suffering for quite a while following the implosion of the comic industry in the 90s
