i'm not sure there is a reasonable argument against the notion Tesla and SpaceX's success have been net positives for the species. especially when one recalls the realities that preceded that success; in the midst of the sixth mass extinction with a rapidly warming world environmentalism was largely viewed as the direct enemy of capitalism and corporations used their resources to stamp out rather than embrace green enterprises + NASA's budget sliced to a historical low under the Obama administration with development in space flight stalled out while activity in it was actively regressing.
Tesla and SpaceX did not exactly solve the issues of multi-generational ecological catastrophe and the species collectively turning its back on our only viable long-term future among the stars, and whatever their successes Elon is only a part of them, but they are both certainly integral parts of that (hopefully) ongoing story. personal opinions on him are mostly distraction from that much more important story.
Yeah but counterpoint he's gross and weird.

A lot of people forget the biggest perk of starting on 3rd base is you can take risks because the risks don't destroy your life. Do you know how many people would be risking startups or trying their hands and building a business if they knew they could fall back on their family money no matter what?
That alone gives TONS of opportunity that most of the world will never see because they can't risk it.
We'll be cooked long before this happens.
Having that safety net is huge, like others have said. You don't need to have been given a loan from daddy for a million bucks or more...but knowing that you have that safety net enables you to take way way more risks. Its amazing when people are like "Yeah but he worked hard and daddy didn't give him $$!"....as if he didn't know if he failed he could just get right back on the horse and go again unlike others. If you come from money it is almost impossible for it to not have a lot to do with your successes. Granted he is a really good business man but there are a lot of really good business people or people with really good ideas that are never able to get anywhere with their ideas or businesses.
You jelly?
Can't decide if closeted gay or lost to the cult. Maybe both.

isn't this the same technology that has had a 98% fatality rate in the monkeys they were testing on? From what I heard they aren't even close to having it safe for humans.
Edit: I imagine the same people excited about this technology are the same people pushing the conspiracy theory that Bill Gates was implanting chips in people with the COVID vaccine.
