I don’t know about the vacuum tube part but I do remember them testing with sleds going over 100 mph in tests. The idea was that you would “park” your car on the sled and it speed you through the tunnel. It was deemed too dangerous or something and then they just decided to have dedicated Teslas with drivers basically driving you through the tunnel like an underground taxi service.

It's the Hyperloop you're thinking of. It's still in the feasibility & R&D phase. Still would require way too much energy to operate it at scale at current tech.

That is not the hyperloop. It looks stupid and deserves ridicule but to call it the hyperloop is really misleading.

Edit: The hyperloop was a vacuum sealed maglev concept to propel pods through a tunnel at extremely high speeds.

The test track they have in LA was powered by a sled and reached 125 mph without a vacuum. Again probably too many technical elements or dangers which prompted them to ditch this design
