For just fuel, this should work. You need to know what your marginal electricity cost per kwh is - check your power bill. National average is 12 cents (.12) but mine is like 19 or 20.

Remember no oil changes, timing belts, spark plugs, stuff like that either.

For me, driving electric is comparable to driving a Prius at $3.20 a gallon cost-wise, basically.

"assumes electric performance of 3 miles/kwh" - I get like 3.3 miles per kwh in my LEAF, but you'll get a fair bit less in a pickup-sized vehicle because of more wind resistance (and rolling resistance due to weight, but mostly wind)

I really wish I could afford to have three vehicles. Then I would just buy a leaf for my daily driver and only use my truck on weekends or when I needed to haul large loads.

Also depending on where you live, you could also get a second meter installed specifically to charge your vehicle at home. Here in California you can have a second meter dedicated for charging and if you charge between 9pm and 12pm (the next day), its a flat 13 cents/kWh. Model 3's are roughly 75 kWh so if you have the High Power Wall Connector on a 240v 60 amp breaker, you can charge up to 44 miles/hr. You could plug in whenever you get home and set up a charging schedule to start charging during the non peak hours and stop charging when you hit a desired level (Tesla recommends 80-90% capacity unless going on a road trip) or whenever the off peak hours end. Using the above scenario of kWh cost and using the Model 3 capacity (75 kW), you are looking at $9.75 base (there is some loss when charging) for 310 miles of range. If you compare this to the efficiency of a 30 mpg car, then it comes out to $0.94/gal. There is another form of efficiency for EV's that uses MPGe, however because of the number being so large, it confuses some people so I tend to stick to the above numbers for me personally when people ask me about the efficiency.

People gonna sue when they can't do the Bond scene because that's what Elon promised us in a tweet. People gonna sue when you can do the Bond chase scene and someone gets run down by a giant RC Tesla because people are fucking stupid and walk in the way of a moving car. We can't have nice things...people are too stupid.

That said it's a neat feature and I want it. Fuck stupid people.

    https://www.mprnews.org/story/2019/0...-in-cold-temps

AAA finds that electric cars have a shorter charge when the temp drops below freezing, as much as 40% less in 20 degree weather (sub-20 wasn't tested).

AAA tested the BMW i3s, Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf from the 2018 model year, and the 2017 Tesla Model S 75D and Volkswagen e-Golf. All have a range of at least 100 miles per charge. They were tested on a dynamometer, which is like a treadmill, in a climate-controlled cell.

The automobile club tested the cars at 20 degrees and 95 degrees, comparing the range to when they were tested at 75 degrees Fahrenheit, according to a report on the study.

At 20 degrees, the average driving range fell by 12 percent when the car's cabin heater was not used. When the heater was turned on, the range dropped by 41 percent, AAA said.

At 95 degrees, range dropped 4 percent without use of air conditioning, and fell by 17 percent when the cabin was cooled, the study found.

For example, AAA's testers determined that the Tesla's range when fully charged at 75 degrees was 239 miles, but it fell 91 miles, or 38 percent, at 20 degrees.

Wonder if they tested on clear dry roads, and whether they were using heat. Rain or snow on the road hurts range too, as does climate control.

I thought O-Rings already taught engineers a lesson about testing for cold weather.

Man that's interesting. I drive 40 miles each way to work at my new job which takes anywhere from 38-60minutes depending on weather time of day and traffic. I was seriously considering a Tesla or another electric/hybrid as my next vehicle but NJ does have a few weeks of below 20 weather every year sporadically.

Really I just want the most comfortable all wheel drive vehicle I can find that has better MPG than my fucking Dodge ram but Tesla and others definitely came up.

No lie though I was getting a recall fixed on my ram and there was a minivan in the show room and it had so many TV's with HDMI ports and places to put Nintendo switches and ps4's it was really tempting to get it and be chauffeured around.

I carpool with two other dudes and if I had that we'd all fight over the back.

Controlled test environment (lab), but heat and no heat were also tested. The article also sourced a Tesla refurbisher from NC who noticed that his Model 3 took double the power for a 15 minute drive during last week's cold snap. He figures short trips would be more costly on the battery while longer trips would be less taxing.

Last year there was a test on electric cars in Norway & Germany to see how they handled it's winter.

    https://www.greencarreports.com/news...ow-did-they-do

Regarding the new 2018 Leaf specifically, the club's test drivers were disappointed that it used considerably more battery energy than expected.

They suggested that perhaps its heat pump to keep the cabin warm was not as efficient as expected in truly cold temperatures.

The Norwegian test reached conclusions roughly similar to those of the German magazine AutoBild, which tested eight electric cars during cold weather in that country.

The magazine found the Ampera-e to have the longest range—no surprise, as it had the largest battery capacity—but the Ioniq Electric to be the most efficient, even at colder temperatures.

I just moved up to La Crescenta/northern Glendale and my 2015 LEAF isn't cutting it anymore. I have to baby it just to do a 62-mile round trip to work, because it's like a 1200' elevation change. Probably going to order a Model 3 soon - unless we can't fit all 3 carseats across in my wife's car (2017 VW Golf sportwagen) for the new baby, in which case I'm probably going to have to inherit her car and buy an SUV or minivan or something.

Model 3's can get up to 300 range. You'll be fine.
