So I heard the other day that Ford is working on a full electric F150 which is if I remember correctly the most popular vehicle in the USA right now. Do you think Tesla or Ford will get an all electric pickup truck to market first? I wonder how tesla will do when more competition comes on board.
Subaru of America CEO also announced plans for full electric in 2021-22 and hybrid all models by around the same time.
People have been saying "Teslas gonna die when the real players get in the game" since they launched.
Here's a quote from reddit that sums up the current situation.
The biggest issue the big automakers have though is their dealer networks will trash their own electric cars because ICE servicing is their big profit center. BEVs cut service costs by 80%+, so why would dealers ever push them? All of Hyundai/Kia EVs like the Kona, e-Nero, Ioniq seem to be severely production limited due to battery supply and according to one source quoted here some weeks ago, as per a British dealership this should go on for another 12-18 months.
Nissan's Leaf got murdered in the US last year and for whatever reason, in the one region where it is successful (Europe) Nissan only assigned a quota of 5k 62kWh Leafs for 2019. That's like 1 week of M3 production.
Volt is dead, while Model 3 killer Bolt is on life support in the US and since Opel was sold practically unavailable in Europe.
E-tron is in a 6 month+ delay, it has atrocious power consumption And the only saving grace, 150kW charging has just been destroyed by v3 Supercharging and 12,000 v2 chargers getting a 145kW boost OTA
I-Pace is also in production hell due to batteries and it took them about 11-12 months since launch to come up with the SW update to unlocked the 100kW charging advertised
VW ID has been delayed by a quarter and will start with pricier versions as well (like Tesla, sand the media bashing for it)
Everything sexy about the Porsched Taycan has been toned down since we saw the prototype and it remains to be seen if it really does have 350kW charging. Currently I've only seen 220-225 in the only video (AutoMotorSport) where it was seen charging.
Ford has nothing, Toyota has nothing, Honda has 1 prototype, Fiat has the limited quantity 500e Mercedes EQC is delayed by 6 months. I mean they were smart and said they will do a VIP edition until fall 2019 instead of the full June release they were promising before
That's the problem in a nutshell. Dealerships have a stranglehold, and don't want to change the status quo. It's why Tesla had such problems selling cars (fighting the dealership model) and it's why the big names have yet to crush Tesla. Tesla will eventually have problems with the other end of that though...even with much lower service requirements they're gonna have a ton of vehicles out there and not enough infrastructure around to service them all.
To be fair availability of good batteries is another issue. Tesla is ahead there as well, and will stay ahead for quite a while. If you want to crush Tesla you're gonna have to make a shitload of batteries...you can't just scrape up a few thousand car's worth from an OEM and expect to compete on either cost or volume with Tesla.
In reality Tesla is the only true threat to Tesla. Traditional car makers aren't ready to fully embrace electrics, and other startup electric car companies are years behind Tesla (and will face the same hurdles). So long as they double down on quality, take the need for after market service and support seriously, and don't do anything exceptionally stupid it's gonna be years before anyone actually does anything except follow Tesla.
Also I heard the Taycan will only have its fast charger at their dealerships. Tesla is ahead of the game because they have such a vast network that they continue to rollout: www.tesla.com/findus. Hell if you live in the Anaheim area there is a new one going up in the Target shopping center near Weir Canyon that’s 14 stalls plus 4 regular DC fast charging non Tesla chargers.
"severely production limited due to battery supply" - that's every manufacturer other than Tesla. There's a reason they built the gigafactory and are building another one in China - it's absolutely necessary to produce enough batteries. Nobody else is anywhere in the ballpark of that sort of capital expenditure for batteries.
And while we might see 350k Model 3's produced this year...that's like 1/3rd of the number of F-series trucks Ford sold in the US alone. If we are really going to move towards replacing ICE vehicles, you're going to need hundreds of gigafactories pumping out batteries. They'll be challenging/exhausting supply lines for lithium, nickel and cobalt - it's going to be a mess.
just need a little near-earth asteroid mining, nbd
This is the biggest hurdle. Basically the technology needs to advance into something that requires different materials. The cobalt would run out before 2030? I think the projection was if they were manufacturing electric at a 1:1 ratio with ICE. Not to mention almost all of the worlds cobalt mines are in Africa. It’s about as much of a mess as it could possibly be but kudos to the companies that are working to fix problems instead of just pointing them out I guess.
What's the next after cobalt? Mythril or titanium?

Maybe we should re-think the way we move through our built environment that both reduces our dependency on single occupancy motorized vehicular transport while also reducing our net carbon footprint without exploiting a people and their land.
This seems like an appropriate thread with a lot of knowledge on the electric market:
My fiance wants to get an electric vehicle so she can drive in the carpool lane here in the LA area. I've been researching them and just not sure what to get. Tesla model S is out of my price range. The model 3 with all the stuff you'd actually want in it is also more than I want to spend.
Is the "stuff you'd actually want in it" available in any other EV?
You don't have to get autopilot, and you definitely don't have to get dual motor or a 300+ mile battery.

Weak, the mid-range option isn't offered on the Model 3 configuration anymore

Seriously though, if you are looking at buying a Tesla soon, I'd order it by tomorrow night.
