AWD non Performance Model 3 owners can now pay $2k to get an acceleration boost that drops the 0-60 times down by 0.5 seconds. Reports coming in that even though the website says the boost takes the car from 4.4 down to 3.9, it's really more like 4.2 down to 3.6 ish seconds because they are not counting the recent free power boosts we got via firmware updates. The only reason why this was even possible was because the Performance variant used the same motors as the AWD version and the Torque and Power curves were software limited.
Talk about an expensive DLC

Anyone that bought that car did so knowing its performance capabilities at the time of purchase. They were clearly fine with the numbers. They clearly did not want to pay more for better acceleration. If they can get a serious boost in performance after the fact for a trivial amount of money they should be fucking ecstatic. It's less than the $8k price increase in going from a Long Range to a Performance at time of purchase. That's a bigger boost to acceleration than you'd get by slapping a supercharger on an LS for a fourth of the cost.
It really is dirt cheap compared to getting that much of an increase in performance compared to any other car ever made.
I don't think you guys appreciate what it takes to shave an entire half second off a 60 time when you're talking about going low 4s to 3s.

Honestly you should spend that 2k on better wheels for a Tesla. Love the cars but hate the wheels and tires

Why would they?
The Performance Model 3 today costs only $3k more than what I paid for my AWD non Performance model 3 last year when including all tax incentives. At the time of purchase, the difference was more like $12k.
Also you can purchase a stealth model 3 (P3D-) as an off menu design which is the Performance Version minus the red brake calipers, spoiler, no white interior option, and only available with 18 inch aero wheels. This option is only $2k more than the regular AWD and you have to call around to different service centers to try to get it. Because of these factors, people (like myself) actually wanted and petitioned for an upgrade for around $1-2k. We were already getting micro power boosts over previous updates to the point where the 0-60 times on the AWD Model 3 dropped from 4.5 down to 4.2 seconds. $2k really isn't that bad to drop it down to 3.7/3.6. This is most likely to cover any unforeseen warranty issues that could possibly pop up in the future.
When is the stock gonna split /cry
