No one with a degree would get hired.

Bac. Degree, Math: on unemployment from previous job about $10-12/hr
Bac. Degree, Education: Subbing + painting side jobs, ~$300-400 a week either way.
Bac. Degree, Biology - Fisheries & Wildlife: unemployed
Bac. Degree, Biology - General: Retail, $8/hr
Bac. Degree, Education: Hot Topic Manager, $12ish/hr
Bac. Degree, Education: Unemployed (but in his case, due to going back to school fulltime)
Some college, dropped out before degree: Construction
Some college, dropped out before degree: Plays poker for 'a living'

Wow we're all doing so well with our degrees. I consider subbing and banking the only acceptable starting career spots for a bac. degree, and the banking is for me, a former-teacher-to-be, and the subber has bleak hopes for a fulltime permanent position as teacher because we're in a state with one of those super conservative Governors who just crushed the state education budget the past few years.

And all but 1 of us graduates graduated at LEAST 1 full year ago (May 2011), with the Biology: Fisheries and Wildlife major getting his degree in 4.0 years, 8 semesters, in May 2010, so we've all had ample time to look and still yet found anything. Some of the interviews I managed to get, I'd go there and there'd be a dozen 40-50 year old balding men there. I'd be wearing a suit too, but just my LOOK and my bare resume, I had no hopes of competing against the resumes and experience they had after being layed off from previous professional work they had held for years.
2 year degree in IT first job started @ 13/hour. 6-7 years later. Hell of a lot more. Got to start some where.

I started making about $12/hr with my masters (that nobody cared about), took 5 years before I got up into $60/hr range.

Does it make it worse if I said that my job doesn't require a high school diploma?

I've noticed that there are essentially two levels of job I can get with a science degree:
    1) BS level : You're a lab tech and can't really go substantially higher. Maybe 60k/year after a few years of lower wages?
    2) PhD + 3 years Post Doc : You're a PI. Six digits, but the first one is probably 1 for quite a while. Maybe high five digits depending on the field.

At the moment I'm on path number 2 and am hoping that all those who came before me will not saturate the market before I get there.

    Computer Networking and Security.

    First jobs were:

    Help desk tech: 25k/yr
    Jr Sys Admin: 35k/yr
    Exchange Admin: 55k/yr
    Senior Sys Engineer: 70k/yr
    Windows Admin: 71k/yr
    Windows Admin: 78k/yr w/ a 7k yearly bonus

In tech experience matters once you have a few years. Always try to keep moving up into new positions. But landing a job degree matters. If you're doing more Cisco/networking stuff I think you'll be easily starting 20-25/hr for your first job and after a few years if you're good at it you can easily break 70-80/yr and I'd say after 7 you can probably break 100k/yr without much issue. Make sure you get your certs on the way. Those help a ton.

Yeah I gotta take the A+ and Network+ Certs this year, probably this winter after I have time to study up on them. I'm waiting on taking some just because I like to see if my classes/college offer discounts after finishing a course or something. Thanks for the info though, I figured I would need to start at a help desk but knowing you can work your way out and hearing about it makes things brighter.

They have more experience than recent college grads so many technical fields will hold on to these folks until they choose to retire.
And if republicans get their way, with medicare turned to vouchers and the retirement age raised on both social security and medicare, this problem will undoubtedly get much, much worse.

Columbia, MD right now. Gonna try to get a job with the government but not gonna put all my eggs in that basket since the background check will take a ton of time. Once I graduate I gotta move out of this area though to some place I can afford, only reason i'm here is me and the fiance are renting the basement of her parents while we finish classes/get our shit together.
