I agree with most of what's said here
    Breath of Fire 1-4
Shining Force 1,2, and if you can find a good translation 3
    Shining The Holy Ark
    Shining in the Darkness

but what I didn't see and I HIGHLY recommend is Granstream Saga for Playstation 1

Most of the Tales series is good. Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Symphonia are among my favorites. I'm sure there are more good ones, but I haven't played about half of them.

I'd recommend you change it to Super Mario RPG first. The game is of easy difficulty, both in the plot and any side stuff you might want to do. I did a run through a couple months ago, was super easy to just enjoy the game with out the need for grinding or anything of the sorts, imo one of the better rpgs to just go back and enjoy for the hell of it.

Blargh, everybody's hit the major stuff.

For Zelda-likes, some good ones are Crusader of Centy on Genesis (and Beyond Oasis, but someone already said it), and The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang on SNES.
    Also, try Robotrek on SNES.

Everyone's said Phantasy Star 4 (god I want a Phantasy Star 5), but 2 and 3 are also worth playing.
Oh and there is a Shadowrun on Genesis and SNES, they are NOT the same game, both should be played.

Even though it's retarded easy, Earthbound for the SNES.
And obviously anything from the main Dragon Warrior (now called Dragon Quest) series.

2 I can sort of see once you get used to it, but I found 3 to be flat out horrible.

Eh, 3 wasn't completely horrible it just never really felt like a Phantasy Star game. It had some interesting concepts with the different generations and all, but the Phantasy Star bits just felt tacked on and never really explored.

edit: I also would like to see a Phantasy Star 5 and not just Phantasy Star Online/Universe titles.

Pretty much what every body is saying. Secret of Mana (especially if you have a friend that wants to play it) and chrono trigger. I would LOVE to be able to play these again for the first time. My little brother and I STILL play secret of mana all the way through once every few years, and we're in our 30s now, heh.

Xenogears is the only thing you seek. Everything else falls in its shadow.

Ill agree on secret of mana, its one of my favorite RPGs of all time. If you have one of those multi tap adapters, you can play 3 players which makes it even better.

Games you absolutely must play if you haven't yet:
    Secret of Mana
    Xenogears
    Chrono Trigger
    Super Mario RPG
    Final Fantasy Tactics
    Earthbound

Personal favorites that I would highly recommend (I'll try not to go overboard here):
    Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
Seiken Densetsu 3/Secret of Mana 2 (story's not as good as the original, but the gameplay is infinitely deeper)
Breath of Fire II (you can skip Breath of Fire I, although if you want to give it a try it wouldn't hurt. it's not bad, but nowhere near as good as II)
    Vagrant Story
    Dark Cloud 2
Dragon Warrior/Quest VII, VIII, or V (or any of them really, but those are the best. Dragon Warrior is an acquired taste though; they tend to be exceedingly grindy games)
    Ys Seven

I could go on and on but I'll stop before I flood you with more suggestions than you could possibly have wanted.

This is pretty much the voice of the entire thread.

I travel on an almost daily basis so I will have plenty of time in the air to start working on this list. Using emulators on my ipad, etc etc

Thanks to all for the suggestions. As I said earlier, I'm starting with Chrono Trigger. About 4 hours in now and absolutely loving it.

Next will be Super Mario RPG

    Secrets of Mana 3rd

then after that, possibly Dragon Warrior/Breath of fire

thanks again for the suggestions, you guys gave me more than enough lol

Suikoden and Suikoden II x1000. Suikoden because it's good, but it also because it makes playing Suikoden II all that much sweeter.

Lunar: The Silver Star and Lunar: Eternal Blue for classic old school RPG experiences (I prefer the Sega CD versions to the PS1 personally). Parasite Eve for PS1. Phantasy Star II and Phantasy Star IV. Crystalis for NES is a great Zelda style adventure RPG with a fantastic soundtrack. The storyline is based loosely on Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Arcana for the SNES is an interesting RPG. Okay story, great soundtrack.

Tons of other titles here that are all well worth playing. Will try to think of more that people haven't already mentioned.

If you love Chrono Trigger after finishing it, do yourself a favor and never ever ever ever play Chrono Cross. Just get the soundtrack instead.

    Thiiiiiiis.

But seriously, there's pretty much nothing else to suggest here that people haven't said already. Maybe a couple that are on the iffy side, just because I don't know if they'd really have aged well to someone that started cutting their teeth on RPGs with FF7, but still. Pretty much everything everyone has said is at least worth your time to try and see if you can enjoy it.

Except for the comment about Chrono Cross, bitches be trippin'. Wasn't as good as CT, but definitely isn't the abomination that some people try to claim it to be.

Chrono Cross would be an incredible game, if it didn't have Chrono on front.
It is ONLY bad by association.
