I'm in agreement with the way they handed out bans but in honesty this exploit was rather small. From the time it got made public the profit margin on it closed within six hours because the market was able to adjust before anet even deployed the hotfix. The Godskull exploit however made tremendous impacts on the precursor market that persisted until the Karka event yet not a single person got banned for it.

I see much of the same justifications present back then too.

What was the exploit exactly? Unless I'm missing something, salvaging an item the game is supposed to give you sounds like working as intended to me. If people made money off it, and Anet doesn't want people to make money, maybe they should've thought out the process better.

it cost something like 1 ecto and snowflake to make item, salvage back for 3-5 ecto and your snowflake. clearly wasn't intended.

Yet they made it and it was in the game.

Ah. Yeah that's a little different than what I thought was going on.

I honestly doubt PvP badges are an issue for RMT. Just pick some undermanned WvW map, take a bunch of your minions to some obscure spot, strip their armor, then let whomever kill them. It might take a while, especially if there's some cooldown on how often a given corpse can pop out a bag, but they don't really have to play legit about it. And if they're possibly using teleport hacks and the like on top, getting ganked by normal players is probably less likely.

Its not just PvP badges that goes into making a legendary, the fact of it is, there's like 400g worth of mats that would move quicker than a legendary and that's what gold farmers are about making that fast money. your not going to see gold sellers sitting at the mystic forge throwing ecto/coins to make clovers.

This is a great idea and made me LOL. I need badges right now and am wondering if I could run 2 accounts on different servers out to a deserted area of Borderlands and have them just kill each other over and over again for like a month. Would be hella funny.

Shame you can't automate it and leave them out there. That would be one looong knock down drag out fight! Hahaha. :D

Wanted to throw my two cents in on the bans thing:

I see a lot of the "Well they are the ones that put it in the game." "How was I supposed to know this was an exploit." etc. excuses. I even had a conversation with a friend last night who said the exact same thing and we had to end the argument at a stalemate (we generally do, neither of us budges on our viewpoints most of the time).

Here's what I say to that: First of all, there is a precedent of them banning for using an exploit like this which was very public and handled in the same way, and I'm sure all of the people that got banned were aware of it, so they knew there was some risk here.

As for the argument that "They put it in the game, so it's their fault." and "How was I supposed to know?" I don't know what thought process you have to go through to think that getting back double/triple of a mat that you USED TO CRAFT THE ITEM IN THE FIRST PLACE is ok. This is a game, games will always have bugs. This is also an MMO, which makes it even more bug prone than a regular game. In a single player game, exploitation of bugs is whatever, you're only hurting your gameplay experience. In an MMO, you're hurting everybody else. It's the attitude that leads to exploiting bugs for personal gain and harming everybody else in the process that they're banning. It's one thing to find a bug and go "oh wow, I could really use this for my benefit" and then report it but it's quite another to go "Ok I'm going to do this, fuck the consequences to the game's economy." I have no problem with them banning the person displaying the latter attitude.

As for the argument that they're not consistent and didn't ban people for the precursor thing: Maybe they made a mistake. Maybe the people that did that have mostly held on to them and it's harder for Anet to track them without all of the precursors being put on sale. Maybe they didn't realize the scale at which that was happening and are paying for it now. Whatever the case, yeah they probably should have banned people for it. But it's in the past and it's over with, the point is they are banning people for exploitation now and hopefully in the future as well.

Were you attempting to woosh me? I assumed you were being sarcastic because I think you're smarter than that. My post was aimed mostly at all the idiots on Reddit spouting that shit.

I did the recipe like 3 times. I lost money and stopped. It was RNG based and reliant on black lion salvage kits for any form of consistency, so to say its obvious that it was an exploit is stupid. And nobody was "hurt" here. The market corrected itself within hours, the snowflakes skyrocketed in price, and Ectos dropped like 2-3s.

It's an asinine policy of theirs to ban for that kind of thing, it was their fault and it wasn't entirely obvious. But either way less than 200 accounts were banned and it was only those who duplicated the recipe thousands of times. Not really sweating it.

My opinion is that most MMO should hire an economist to analyze their game design, since so many games depend on their economy. Then this pre-curser BS or Wintersday Ecto issues should be far less likely to happen.

Shouldn't need an economist for something as common sense as this.

Speaking of which, doesn't ANet have one on staff?

Anet's pretty good at mass bannings over stupid though so this shouldn't really be a surprise. A shame, though.
