Computer not booting from disk or usb drive

my friend's computer has an old ass version of xp on it (not even sp2) and we can't get any drivers to work for it, so can't get online with it Ethernet or wireless, so instead, went to put windows 7 on it.

It won't upgrade/install (error message) if you try while already logged into windows and when you set boot device to dvd rom it won't boot from it and my usb drive isn't even an option to boot from.

So what can I do with this piece of shit?

    Sell it.
Get someone else with an old dvd drive to lend it to you to install from it.
Or try and clean the drive

Eh well I'd just get a drive from someone else at this point.
Or try and reinstall from the xp cd

The drive itself works, the computer just refuses to boot from it

Did youset it to boot fromthe bios?

Windows disks always ask to press any key to boot from cd.

Alywrnatr try and press f12, see if the boot menu comes up

Yes, tried bios and the one where you just select a boot device from the start as well and from the boot menu the usb drive isn't an option, I'd be able to do it from there if that weren't an issue

Well if the drive works and the computer has a boot from cd option.
Is the cdrom drive jumper set as master or slave?

You sure its a bootable dd?

Yea it's bootable, confirmed that with my lappy. I'm not sure about the master/slave thing, but there's a cd rom and a dvd rom and from the bio boot, it definitely says dvd rom as the first boot option (and his CDrom drive doesn't even open)

Re: Computer not booting from disk or usb drive

Open the computwr and unplug the cdrom from mobo and power.
    Then try again

Also going out and phone out of battery but unplugging the cdrom should do yhe trick

You cannot upgrade from windows xp to windows 7, this must be a clean install. My concern is , however, if the machine truly is xp sp1, I highly doubt the machine even meets the minimum specs to run windows 7.

Your best option is to simply download the correct drivers onto a usb stick, then install the drivers from that. It sounds to me like you are not using the correct drivers. If you install incompatible drivers, usually the system will simply fail during the install of said drivers, or appear to have installed them correctly, but they wont fully install.

Open device manager and examine all devices with a yellow !

Then go to the manufacturer's website of whoever built the computer, they will be there.

It also sounds like you have the jumper in the ide dvdrom set to slave and the cd rom set to master. If you change these to be cable select, it will boot your dvd.
