But Reagan is touted as the republican golden child. He can do no wrong, and if you live a good republican life you get to shake the great man's hand in heaven.

Everyone who i know who is sane, believes the whole election process has been fucked for many generations.

I think the GOP has pretty well established that where they're going, they don't need facts.

Especially since Romney's campaign has outright said they're not going to be "dictated by fact-checkers"

Potentially off topic, but what is it about Reagan that republicans worship and democrats abhor?

It's actually about petitions required to get a candidate's name on the ballot. It's extremely likely that without those petitions...

...absolutely nothing would have changed. Talking about one county in Indiana here, you think Obama's campaign would cut the required signature limit that close?

    Re: The big sham

Voter registration is different from petitions to get a candidate on the ballot.

To understand the adoration understand the backdrop. Saigon fallen and with it so much sacrificed in vain, hundreds held hostage by the Islamic revolution in Iran, murder and rape rates per capita the highest in recorded history--roughly double what they had been in the 50s, the economy tottering with rampant unemployment and inflation, and the world on the brink of nuclear holocaust as it had been for nearly three decades.
Deep disillusionment and a withering malaise had settled on the country; the American dream in question with crime and poverty skyrocketing and the limitations of American power painfully illustrated in the rice paddies of Southeast Asia.

enter a handsome actor championing a radical form of conservatism breaking sharply from Keynesian economic policies and détente foreign policy.

To begin with, he was powerfully charismatic. One of the greatest soundbite orators in American history, (shining city on a hill, government is the problem, evil empire, tear down this wall, ash-heap of history) and his quick wit (after he was shot he told his wife "i forgot to duck" and asked the surgeons if they were Republicans, "i won't exploit my opponent's youth and inexperience") endeared him to millions in a way sprsrsness cannot.

He adopted a harsh and uncompromising foreign policy spoken in terms of morality which vibed well with the religious right. Iran released the hostages within hours of his inauguration fearing a retaliatory strike, but most significantly engaged in an arms race with the Soviet Union, one their faltering economy could not compete in while baking bread, and the resulting economic discontent hastened its downfall ending the cold war in American victory, if there was a victory in there at all. He clearly was not the prime agent of the USSR's collapse, its dissolution was inevitable he merely hastened the process, but he sure received more credit for it than anyone else.

Domestically he cut non-military government expenditures, busted unions, and signed broad across-the-board tax cuts, as well as introducing significant deregulation; the first to enact supply side economics. Job creation and GDP growth were strong while inflation and unemployment decreased dramatically. He the founder of the war on drugs and an overall increase in criminal prosecution which did decrease substance abuse and violent crime, though at the cost of creating a prison-industrial complex which would lead to the highest incarceration rate in the first world.

Fundamentally, through his rhetoric, cleaning up suburban society, ending the economic crisis (though Paul Volcker was the man who actually ended it) and reestablishing America as the dominant superpower, he reestablished the notion of American exceptionalism that was lost. He made America believe in itself again.

why do Dems hate him ? because he was a glib politician who substituted one-liners for elevated discourse, saw the world in a stark black & white delineation that led to us supporting massacre in Latin America, seemed to care more about economic growth than standard of living increases, demonized drug use, was oblivious to the AIDS issue, and staged a national cultural attack on unions. they saw him as an unfit, simple-minded liar who got in bed with the corporations and launched reckless assaults on the middle class while running skyrocketing deficits to pay for his unnecessary military spending.
