    Last time I checked SE makes the latter category, not the former, thus complaining that Lightning's action are limited by something is incredibly stupid.
    Really? Because Kingdom Hearts, Type-0 and Crisis Core are what I'd define as real time combat (aka action games aka action games with rpg elements). You can't limit actions with a fucking ATB bar and expect it to be considered real time, because it isn't.

    There's no evidence you can control movement or your actions freely and if you cannot then it isn't even an action RPG. CAUSE WHERE'S DA ACTION?

    The first trailer is up. Though both Kotaku and GT are broken ass links. Anyone else seen this rehosted? I'm hearing good things about it.

    edit: nevermind, here it is! I'm a little bit torn. Looks like they tried to mix a little bit of infamous/assassin's creed style climbing & exploring into FFXIII-2.



    Also, I hate Hope's narration. Hopefully it switches between various known characters or something~

    This is exactly how I feel XIII-3's combat should have been, more specifically if the game is only going to be about one character in combat the entire time, I'm down for traditional I kick you, and then you kick me, and whoever has the biggest boot wins combat system but really there shouldn't be that limitation for this.

    I don't know why but the action bar combat style just doesn't fit FF for me, I'd much rather them just go back to single action attacks and watch it play out from there rather every fight being "oh, well I'll just tap up, click automatic and let it do its thing and browse reddit while the bar ticks back up." Sure it may not have been like that for some battles in XIII and XIII-2 but it was for about 98% of the game.

    XIII-2's lightning DLC gave me so much hope for this one, it had 2 of the best fights in the game that involved switching paradigms pretty quickly if you wanted to succeed without levelling up massively first.

    It does baffle me how on the one hand, SE talks about strengthening the brand and restoring FF to its former glory, and on the other it's churning out low-budget spinoffs and throwing the FF name around pretty flippantly.

    Remains to be seen whether this was just a shitty trailer or whatever, but what other game recently has released its first trailer in a pretty bad state and then changed dramatically outside of MMOs?

    I eagerly await Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII: A Pulse Reborn.

    The combat system reminds me of TERA at the moment, slightly, minus movement, due to the 4 control setup seen on the bottom right. However, when that behemoth thing jumped up and was about to dive onto Lightning, it does indeed seem/feel like you cannot move from it at all.

    Then again, I don't want to trust early trailers anymore.

    Don't forget this one when FFXIII was in pre-development lol, turned out to be a complete lie/concept -- it might happen again:

    I still wouldn't get your hopes up of the final content being drastically different from the trailer as it was for FF13. The battle system is quite KH like as I was expecting, but I also don't think its the end of the world. Will have to wait and see more before I can judge it.

    The art might be awesome in the pictures/paintings (and i definitely agree), but it seems to have been lost in translation, instead of the valhalla-esque colour scheme we've appear to have achieved Assassin's creed 1 quality cities with a checkered overlay.

    Besides that, everyone who works at SE seems to be obsessive over how good graphics are a part of dat FF feel. Yoshi and wada said recently in FFXIV interviews (and have been since ARR was announced) that story, graphics and gameplay were the 3 pillars that made a good FF game. Story went out the window after XIII-1 (though I still enjoyed XIII-2 and Caius was almost good enough to save it alone), gameplay's always been a bit on the average side but it remains to be seen how that turns out, and graphics, well...

    The evidence is in the announcement videos. I'm pretty sure you can even see Lightning blocking an attack in this trailer.

    Looks like evasion commands are tied to button presses and consume the ATB bar like any other command. It's looking more like the 'guard' command from every other FF game than a Daigo-style parry of whatever the monster is swinging at you.

    Most action games have a guard/parry button so I'm not sure where you're getting at. They said we'll move around freely and unless they change that statement it's still true, alpha footage or not.

    Edit: ATB is consumed as she's getting hit so they're actually hitting the button right there, it's really no different than using a parry in most action games.

    I'm saying the command is almost certainly used pre-emptively, just like you did in FFXIII. This separates it from more proactive button presses present in, say, Zelda or Tales games.
