this sentence is absurd.not all christian sects take a huge stance against homosexuality. this is like saying "why would anyone that downloads music [disobeying laws of the land is considered a sin] remain a christian"

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof
The term marriage is secular in all legal forms in the eyes of the state, when you apply for a marriage license there is no check box for religion.

The state determines the definition of, and the rights and benefits granted by marriage. Marriage is a civil right.

Opposition to same sex marriage stems from people's personal religious beliefs, not a legal issue or argument.

It's not absurd, it just neglects the reality that Christianity is whatever the individual/congregation chooses to make it and its confusing to many considering that Christianity at its root is a system to avoid being damned for all eternity by a creator entity that desires to save you but only through abject servitude.

Hardcore extremists take the literal words of the Bible at face value and much of it has negative things to say about gays in both the OT and NT. Others laugh at this literal interpretation (and have been laughing since the foundation of Christianity as a state sanctioned religion back in Rome) and make the text out to be guidelines and teachings rather than actuality and thus you wind up with the prismatic religious beliefs (amusing considering the LBGT flag) that range from "God hates gays." to "God doesn't like gays but accepts them." to "God loves everyone... and you should too."

Theft is against the law because it's a crime against another person. The church's stances against homosexuality have nothing to do with the general 'do not harm others' rule that informs most criminal legislation. It's pure fear and superstition that fuels the anti-gay movement. I don't know what crossed your mind at the moment to consider this a valid analogy but jesus fucking christ is it stupid.

Both of them are breaking christian rules I think is her point, whether those rules make sense to us logical people or not is something else entirely.

It's one thing to be part of an organization having broken a rule at a point in history, it's another thing entirely to be part of an organization whose rules degrade your very identity. I don't see thieves in denial 'working from the inside' trying to get the catholic church to recognize marriages between thieves.

not only do you completely miss the point, but once again showing ignorance of trying to think that chritianity = catholism. (here's a hint: they didn't say they were surprised there are gays that are catholic.)

    Bitch please.

I picked a Christian sect that hates the gays and that actively campaigns against their status as equals in American society. I didn't say 'Church of Sweden' for a very specific reason. I can see reasons why an LGBT person would choose to stay in those sects, but in the context that Kluwe is addressing Americans talking about American gays and the problems they face, there is pretty much zero reason to stay a Christian and a gay American.

good thing I wasn't arguing against Kluwe. You basically just admitted to twisting your argument in attempts to make it fit.

What reasons would a gay person in this country have for being christian? Most around here wouldn't even accept gay people as members.

Then they're irrational creatures acting against their own interests. I guess masochism takes many forms.

Yeah let's cherry pick from holy scripture just so we can have a cool club for kids that 'marries gays.' Too bad most states and the entire federal government won't recognize it, so really all you're doing it keeping yourself deluded and a second class citizen so you can clap your hands together once a week and say 'Amen.'
Being Christian and gay makes no fucking sense. Cognitive Dissonance, it's not just for the straights!

quakers supported gays before supporting gays were cool.

and again, saying christian and gay makes no fucking sense is like saying fats and christian make no fucking sense.

The bible has more to it than issues on same-sex marriage, get over it.

In general being religious makes no sense if we are to take the very meaning of the word 'sense' at face value.

It just happens to make even less sense to retain your member's card if you're also gay and american.

But I guess being gay doesn't automatically turn the rational circuits of your brain back on.
