i mentioned how the series would have been so much better (or at least leave a better aftertaste) if they just ended it at the first novel material, but since they go out of their way to animate the second half and turn the chuuni self insertion masturbatory level to 11, i really don't see why ker couldn't just call the series for what it is.

Personally I would've preferred if they did the entire first season within SAO to really flesh out the world and the side characters (more two/three parters would've been nice) and saved ALO for a second season as overall the entire show felt kinda rushed once things got to the end of SAO.

The trouble is there isn't that much more canon for SAO.
There's First Day, Reason for the Whiskers, Rondo of the Transient Sword, and Concerto of Black and White (which is incomplete at this time) which cover up to floor 3.
Then The Progressers, "Sound of Water, Sound of Hammer" (to short and minor to make an episode), "Cold Hand, Warm Heart" (again, very short), The Day Before, and Algade Showdown (short and also very silly.) The short ones aren't really suited to being merged to make an episode, and you'd make the timeline wonky if you tried.
There isn't enough there yet for a full single season when added to what was animated, and then there ends up being a very heavy bunching of the first few floors, and the KoB denouement.

Also, there is a change in dynamic between Kirito and Asuna between the first few floors, what happens in The Progressors, and what finally happens starting in chapters 5-12. It worked fine with what they had in the show, but... there are gaps in the progression of the full story at the moment, and it makes the whole thing feel off. Until more is written to connect the dots, it's a bad idea to try an animate it.
Kind of a narrative uncanny valley, you can do a lot with a little, or make something amazing with a big amount of material. But there's a midrange where the extra writing feels superfluous to what's needed for the little amount, and unfinished and halfassed when compared to whats needed for the big amount.

It's more along the lines of the beta tester having an upper hand on everyone else because they know how the game works and know where to level and etc, etc, and choosing not to share that information especially when 10,000 peoples lives are on the line

It's more than that, the character is a bit expanded in the light novels.
He's a whiner, a schemer, a glory hog, and on two occasions gets lots of people killed because of it.

Light Novels that are written from the first person perspective of the main character are always butchered in anime adaptions.

You don't turn a first person story into a third person story easily. It rarely works.

Examples:

Zero no Tsukaima
Infinite Stratos
Accel World
Sword Art Online
Kore wa Zombie desu ka?! (this comes close)

monogatari and suzumiya haruhi series pull it off surprisingly well though, but really i think this SAO just fail for the most part because it take an interesting concept, but honestly expect just that to carry on the entire story without having anything original or well thought out aside from the initial setting.

but then again, that's an overly generous assessment on my part and would probably be the nicest thing i'd ever say about the series.

Just watched this, might have to watch it again to see how I feel but I think it could have been amazing if they just stuck with the SAO story for 25 episodes. Instead, they rushed it way too fast and then tried way too hard it make it seem like anyone dying in ALfheim meant anything at all. I can understand him having a bit of a complex about dying in a game after SAO but it was kinda stupid. I wish they just stuck with SAO for the full show and expanded on the relationships and push up the levels. You never really see them fighting on the front lines, other then when he parties with Asuna and we only saw 3? boss battles out of 78?. They had a great idea and just completely wasted it by tearing through it. I still enjoyed it mostly but it could have been epic.
