Hi all, need the contents on a cassette tape converted to a .wav file (not really sure why, work related, was asked to research). Anyone familiar with this, the hardware I'd need/software or anything? Thanks.

Just plug it into your microphone jack.
the above cable will only pipe the audio into your computer, youll need a high quality recording software and no wav player doesnt count.
at my job when people need this we recommend the http://www.totalrecorder.com/ software, its free as far as I recall and allows you to do pretty long recordings. I stress that youll want to convert these after the fact to WMA or MP3 files before you send them to a transcriber unless they are in house then it doesnt matter. The computer also will probably need to stay unused during the recording time as windows sounds can bleed over.
another option is the above cable with a basic digital recorder, preferably an Olympus unit as they arent proprietary except for a few specific pro grade models. You can plug into the digital recorders mic jack and just turn on the recording that way, the advantage is you wont need a computer for that type of setup.
youll need transcription software if you dont already have it capable of handling files upwards of 90 minutes, which the weaker softwares cant do. Your mileage may vary depending on the length of your tapes (standard vs non-standard) and if you need them in 1 single extra long file or multiple files (1 per tape, which is recommended)

Thank you very much for the advice! I'll check for more information regarding the length of the tape and whatnot. It'll be used in house. I think they want to take our "on hold" music and convert it to a .wav file to play
I've used Cdex to convert wav files to mp3 files in the past. All I was doing at the time was outputting audio via Winamp () to a wav format and then converting to an mp3.
