a) I hit reply before Ratatapa posted, so the unique/untradable comment was unknown to myself as well as you (as you obviously would have mentioned it if you knew).
b) They changed their minds because in the past they had stated their intentions of removing all of the dated equipment and obsolete parts from the game during the whole "dated" switch patch.
This doesn't mean anything for the people with "truckloads of gil." Whether they have 200M or 700M is of no consequence. The ultra-rich don't yearn for anything and all the gil to their name may as well not even exist.
However, for low-mid tier players who scrape by on AF and modest gear, it's a boon. Those players can now afford luxurious, multi-melded, HQ items in short time with only a fraction of the effort it would take without the Atomos gold rush. But it gets worse: players are too busy doing Atomos or consumed by pre-2.0 apathy, so supplies (both raw materials and finished goods) are way down. Meanwhile, prices are going up, up up, but it doesn't discourage consumers because they can grind more gil off Atomos in the course of an evening.
And I don't think I need to add that all this wealth is springing from a money-printing vendor, not from the pockets of other players.
In what fucking world will people all of a sudden decide to sell something for 200k instead of 2m because SE trashed the value of gil?
More like, people who farmed up 20m will now have 2m, and that 2m will not buy them jack or shit from the wards.
I bet that they wipe the price histories or cut them to scale to further the process also.
My guess is things will be taken out of bazaars and placed into inventory. Actually that might be hard to do... What makes more sense is before November 1st they tell everyone to make sure that they have nothing up for sale/repair/etc because theres a chance it will get lost during transfer.
I will be multiplying every price by 10 in V2 and if I wouldn't have paid it in V1 I'll not be paying the V2 price. I imagine some things won't drop by 90% however and may settle at 70-80% less, especially raw materials that are already ridiculously cheap.
Yoshi has a post on the redenomination, jp onry for now:

It's basically what some people were saying: gil gets cut by 1/10th.
Yeah it sounds like hes apologizing but that is indeed what is happening.
I hope they realize that cutting people's gil by a 1/10th does nothing to rebalance anything as long as they let this Atomos event go on.
Was just about to post this very thing.
I'd just like to point out that a few tidbits - like, I dunno, double-bound Obelisk, Astrolabe, and whatever the hell the WHM one is - have had prices doubled since Atomos kicked into town. Other items, too. <.< AH on Durandal is a mess.
And what, they think they're gonna fix it by dividing by ten? Yeah, no.
I suppose I have no choice but to spend the week clicking the hell out of Dawn Drops or watch my paltry 11mil devalue even further. -_- And here I thought I was makin' good progress on Curtana.
Why are they doing it, though? It came out of the blue, as far as I am concerned. o.O Has a reason been given?
EDIT: Really, this amounts to "We're going to cut your liquid assets by ninety percent unless you partake in the mindless tedium of (quite literally) eight hundred purchases of dawn drops per million gil." Eight thousand for ten? Sixteen for twenty? o.o Regardless of their reasons for playing net worth division, this is an unbearable situation.
I know it wasn't and I wasn't my intention to imply it was; I apologize it came off that way. It only drives the point home though because this event is undermining what they wanted to put in place to rebalance the economy before Dawn Drops were so hugely taken advantage of.
I think the goal is if they delete gil by a 10th, then they will delete all gil that was just added by Atmos. Think about it. If you have 20mil, you will have 2mil. That's a big loss.
Dawn Drops aren't even the problem. It's the fact that people are buying single over-aspected crystals for 20k EACH. I can make up to 400k an hour doing this(theoretically). That's far faster than trading in Dawn Drops for eight hours.
Regardless, even though I don't think they're going to divide all player gil by ten, if they do for some reason, I'll just start buying up expensive items before the migration. I'll spend all my gil and have it in equity.
