Yes, because everyone has the same values in this world. As stupid as that shit would be (seriously, who slaps their kids for farting) the principle is what's important. The problem in this situation is that their values are archaic and their response exaggerated. Instead of telling them to change their shit energy would be better spent demonstrating why it's wrong.

In the case of the Catholic church for example, not every priest is a pedophile. The proper response would be to blame the priest. That isn't what happens, right? I exaggerated a bit, but yeah, she would physically strike me for acting towards her in a manner she found disrespectful; also applies to burping.

My mother and her sisters/my aunts are the type of people who excuse themselves to another room (9 out of 10 times, the restroom) just to fart. My girlfriend does the same thing. While all of us understand these are fairly common bodily functions, we were just raised not to do it in the presence of others, most specially with (ninja) farting. If a burp somehow manages to escape your mouth while around people, you apologize and that's that, but back in the day, I'd prolly get slapped in the mouth if I burped at the lunch/dinner table for whatever reason.

Thought some people might be interested in this video. Though it might not have quite enough of one's own opinion in it to make it in this section.

Listened to the whole debate and while the pro-peace side was very articulate in their defense of the concept of a peaceful Islam, the second section regarding Islam in practice (women, sharia law, apostasy etc.) completely demolished their efforts to salvage the religion as it stands and fed the side arguing against Islam being peaceful.

The lack of self-reflection on behalf of the two pro-peace debaters is also worth noting as Majjid turned around only after being imprisoned which makes a serious argument against the (literal) text itself being a source of peace and Zeba Khan's personal situation of being born to secular-minded, pluralistic parents looking through a secular lens (that has yet to be embraced throughout the ME) colors her interpretation of the text in very western terms.

The side arguing against Islam + peace had a weak first section relying a bit too much on appeals to the audience, strawmen and ad hominem especially given the huge amount of leeway their opposition left open to be discussed regarding the prophet, the texts and appeals to political and colonizing forces being the source of Islamist fundamentalism. It made the self-proclaimed rationalists look very irrational beside their theistic counterparts and I know debates get heated but when you're shouting over the moderator it's just bad form and contrary to the purpose of the discussion.

The arguments about the character of the prophet Mohammad didn't quite go deep enough (as Islam hinges itself on his testimonials) and the comparison of the Founding Fathers to Mohammad (in temporal terms) seemed to be silly but I feel the second section was far more productive than the first.
