So this is my first Monster Hunter game. Just started playing today. Still getting used to it, but any suggestions for things I should be sure to do/not to do?

Don't give up too easily. I don't know about other people, but I had a hard time getting used to the game. I failed quests. A lot. But playing with a few of the people on here and getting my bearings really helped a lot. This is the first one I was able to really get into and I now love the series. I really wish I had stuck with earlier games.

Then again, I may just be bad at games in general, and all of this is moot.

weird, I tried doing the charm table thing, my first attempt showed Os on 2, 5, 7, 9, the next showed it only on 1, and the 3rd showed Os on all numbers except 15

the US site wouldn't work (as Doombear indicated) and the jp site frequently would load


all I have so far is a gemmed Jaggi set and a bsuter sword, and I'm on 3* village quests, I guess I could just reset anyway and ensure I am on 10. It will be a bit of a pain to get more King's Frills but at least I'll know not to try it on the capture quest

woo, snagged a Table 10 new save

I only had 15 hours in my old save, and a lot of that was wasted gathering/mining in Moga, King's Frills, and raging when my only trap didn't succeed in Great Jaggi capture quest

I get the feeling I'll equal my gains in a 5 hour save this time around, especially since I didn't mess around with SnS at the start this time

oh, does lasting power affect auto guard? I could swear I had auto guard charm, perhaps on starting armor or a mixmatch with that and some jaggi pieces before I finished the set

No. I believe you get an auto guard charm at the start of the game. I haven't played in several months now, but I would think you could equip the charms through the box in your hut just like other equipment.

Find a couple weapons you feel comfortable using. I personally like Dual Blades and Switch Axe. Switch Axe is definitely a heavy hitter and has the advantage of a short-hop sidestep defensively as well as the Sword Form. It also does a charged burst which is good for breaking parts and ending a combo in Sword form. Sword mode won't bounce, which is good for breaking parts that normally aren't target-able with a slashing weapon, and has "Phials" which will add damage or elements to the attacks.

Dual Blades are fast, great for applying statuses (Poison, Para, etc) and you have the "Demon Mode" from successful attacks which increase attack speed, damage, and you gain resistances to wind knockback. It also has a combo that will not bounce while in Demon mode. The disadvantage to these two weapons is they tend to lose sharpness fairly quickly, they can't block, and elemental damage may be restricted by either Phials (Swaxe) or because there is a reduction (30% for DS).

Long sword is another popular choice. They are similar to Switch Axe in their defensive capabilities, but have the added advantage of having a slash during their short-hop as well as a spirit gauge. With the full gauge you have increased attack as well as a Spirit Combo for extra damage.

use raw meat to make rare steak or well done steaks (play with the sound on and wait a heartbeat or 2 after the sound stops)

There is a slight color change for a well done steak as well. There is only a split second between well done and burnt though.

Farm up some Resources and complete the farming expansions as quickly as you can. These will help you keep potions in stock without having to do much of anything. The fishing spots can be used to gain resources as well as cash.

I think this one is obvious, but try to collect materials for weapons and armor, don't buy it. This is a good resource for weapons, armor, item locations, as well as monster weaknesses etc.

oddly I didn't receive a charm as yet in my 2nd save (apparently it comes from no love for Ludroth), and another difference I noticed was I only received 1 power paddle, not sure where I would have gotten my 2nd one in my original save

Kill Ludroth in Free Hunt and you have a chance to get one. I don't know if that's where you got the last one, but that's how you can get them. You can also get them from Argosy Captain I believe.

successfully transferred Wii U save to 3DS -- I went out and bought a 2nd 3DS in anticipation of Christmas, gonna return the one I get for Christmas later and do the switcheroo when gf doesn't see

I couldn't wait to start farming away from home, I might be hooked :p

New to MH3U. My friend got it for me and told me to start the game at a certain time and apparently I have item table 2. I don't really know what this means, all I know is that he said it's not so great. Worth restarting? I had logged like infinite hours into MHFU and if I lose out on really good things I can only get this way, I might be pissed. Will I be able to get the items from the other tables in the game, or is this just shit that doesn't matter so much?

Whether it matters is entirely up to you and what you plan on doing really...? Going for a specific table is useful in min/maxing and that is it. Here's another thing to consider. Even if you get the specific table you want, you still have to do some ridiculous sniping to get the charm you are after as there are thousands and thousands in each table. So that one charm that is amazing on Table 10? Prepare to spend hours, sometimes days, to get it.

So yeah, if you plan on putting that kind of time in then landing on a specific table is worth it. If not, ignore em and just try not to start on a "cursed" table (they have far fewer charms and are generally not great). That said i set myself up on Table 10, have almost 700 hours in MH3U and still haven't nabbed one of those God Charms. I have done just fine without em. I have some nice Evasion charms, and that is fine by me.

I redid it this morning and got table one. It was pretty painless to redo the missions this time around.

I didn't know about the sniping thing. I guess having any non-cursed is pretty ok. I didn't know the tables were that big, or really what it meant.

I think it is just quite easy, depending on your personality type, to get swept up by it all. Completely a non-issue when it comes to most people's enjoyment of the game. There are those types though that won't settle for anything but the best possible gear/skill set out there. You'll always have the opposite end of the spectrum shouting that any mission is beatable with no armor if you have the skill to compensate. I just think it isn't worth worrying about... either way.

Table one is a very very good all purpose table. Good charms for ranged and melee. You shouldn't give tables another thought! =) Oh and yes, Charm Sniping is craziness.

Dunno if you got the circle pad pro, but I find it miles easier to use than the Dpad + circle. I think it's $20. Well morth it in my opinion, but then again I have a few games that are compatible.

yeah I have one in the mail, should arrive by Wednesday. Certain fights are quite difficult without the proper camera + using claw (gonna be saving my rathian fights for home on Wii U until it arrives). I wish I got mine for $20, no one seems to carry it in stores so I ordered it off amazon

passed my 15h mark as compared to my pre-charm table 10 reset and I'm miles ahead of where I'd been #feelsgoodman

a down note though: tried HR1 Rathian on non cpp 3ds and had my first death. I haven't been using nutrients or mega nutrients in the village but I think I will for Port or Online


oh, and something cool happened on the bus yesterday, some random dude asked what I was hunting (I told him bnabra with great sword, ugh lol) and he told me about a fb group that meets up in Toronto for LAN party style playing downtown, looking forward to it

Oh and I can't imagine playing this game without the CPP. It is so permanently attached to my 3DS that I still have no 3DS case =(

Wroggi set has poison resist, you can;t get poisoned at all with it on. I used that for a bit as a step stone to Volvidon.

I think poison immune would make rathian fight a breeze. What did you gem for Wroggi/Volvidon? I was looking at Volvidon and trying to figure out if I could get Attack Up (L) and Evasion +2 with LR gems

I think I just got it to Attack Up (M) to hold me over. I know there's a tool that can tell you charm builds based on your table and what you want as far as skills, but I can;t remember the name offhand.

This - Athena's Armore Set Search Tool. Best tool ever once you start getting a decent Charm collection going, IF you enter in your charms so it knows what you have. Use it. Love it. Addiction enhanced!

Some tips:
I like to set the results filter to Max Defense usually
Make sure to set what table you are on (if you want to set Charms to Use Any)
Set your current Quest Ranks so that it knows what you have access to hunt (Tanjia for Port Quests, Moga for Village)

This partnered with Evernote or the like? Best thing ever.
