There's an objective at the top right when you start the minigame. Also the little circle on the bottom left shows you what having x amount of amity does (unlocks a quest or knowledge about a certain topic etc). But yeah the only thing you lose is energy which replenishes semi-fast anyways.
So I have 392 amity with the guild goblin guy, and he gives knowledge of wolf hills at 200 amity. How do I actually learn about the new knowledge from him? Same question with a stable lady. She gives a quest at 180, and I have triple that, but I can't find out how to obtain the quest.
Normally after you get past a certain amity threshold it's good to back up a few feet from the NPC and re-approach them. Any knowledge tidbits they might have will then appear on the main bar at the bottom under quests, convos, go-back, exit, etc... there should be something new to click on similar to other NPCs that require you to give them x-amount of energy to learn something.
My understanding is that it will discover the place for you if you haven't already, hence maybe why you aren't receiving the prompt to learn at the bottom? If not a discovery it may be something affiliated with the area, to which you may have already gained without talking to the NPC. I think it's similar to instances where I've been clicking around a room and a book about bears gave me a C in knowledge about them without having to fight.
Edit: added some stuff~

seems there are level requirements that aren't noted when getting past a threshold... but as far as knowledge, you may have already gained knowledge on it. Best to always check first in knowledge menu before burning energy.
That link and explanation makes sense. I'm just trying to get a sense of what to do to gain contribution points so I can get started doing caravan escorts and wagon-train hijinks. Trying to do more than just fight monsters and progress the uhh... "storyline" we have here.
For contribution points just do all the quests you see. It would probably be faster to just do quests you can already get without playing the conversation mini game. At some point pretty early on you'll start seeing daily quests you can also do for easy contribution. I'm currently at 100 contribution from just running around the world and doing all the quests I see.
Like zero said, questing will give you the contribution exp you're searching for. It will build at a steady pace until you hit 300 (soft cap.) Contribution EXP gained will switch to a slow crawl after you reach the soft cap.
Pro tip: Carry like 20-30 logs around with you or an axe, so many daily quests request 2-10 logs be turned in (not required to gather after accepting.)
Moar tip: Go to a town and pick up any fishing dailies you can find, empty your inventory and AFK fish over night. You'll most likely complete most if not all the quests, then turn in the next morning. You can then take the fish and turn them in for trade-exp and silver to the trader or dry it with production to save for cooking later.
Going back though, expanding your knowledge on monsters, people, places, and things will increase your overall energy. While the letter grade you receive on monster knowledge is completely random, once you locate Calpheon City there will be a library there that you can erase the knowledge (letter grade received) in attempt to get a new one. The high the letter grade (S+ being highest) the better chance you have to get lewts, do more damage, and receive less damage.
Tip: Make an alt and park it by the knowledge reset NPC, switch whenever to reset knowledge if you're farming in an area and would like to attempt a higher grade (costs 10 energy.) Alts will share your energy cap gained on your main but have their own pool to use.
So I'm not sure what's going on but my black spirit is giving me quests at all kinds of levels. Ended up getting the quest to kill Belmorn at like 39. Killed him last night at 40 (acc was a bitch). Is my black spirit broken or did they adjust quest levels in NA?
There are a various things that affect black spirit quests. Some are level based but others are based of previous quest points. I remember getting stuck because I hadn't talked to an NPC someplace in Glish. I had 0 spirit quests and doing this opened a floodgate of new ones. So take that into consideration.
Any guest passes? Looking to try this game out sunday. Been hesitant to buy and wanna try it first.
Anyone else been experiencing a lot of disconnects? Hard to AFK fish when it seems to kick me off 10 minutes after I walk away.
Unrelated, who do I need to talk to for a guild invite. Cant find the names list in the thread.
^ certain channels seem to kick me a lot. Not sure if it's unstable channel or what.
Send a PM to Senji for guild details.
Had an awesome GVG begin last night between ||Bastion|| (us) and LOTD.
It all started with a couple of their high-levels killing some of our members that were grinding tree spirits. Our heavy hitters rolled in and started mopping the floor with them. Butt-hurt /tells followed from LOTD messaging us, I can't remember the exact quote but "The dead can't speak, bring your homies if you want to fight" (us to them.) Guild declaration of war followed.
last I checked before bed it was like 36-6, we were destroying them.
One of ours was at a fishing hotspot and noticed a LOTD on a raft afk fishing. I met up with him and we ended up killing him xD
It was so hard fighting on the rafts, even an AFK person... some attacks would fling me off the boats/rafts to the bottom of the ocean and I'd have to swim back up, was laughing so hard.
||Bastion||'s been an awesome guild. Very helpful, friendly, and funny people. We're doing guild quests pretty consistently to level up the guild to increase max member size.
Hit up Senji if you want in :D
Embarrassed to report I'm the one who got ganked at the start lol

Lol! Missing some good stuff while on vacation. But this is only the beginning I'm sure.
I don't see anything embarrassing about it haha, you were EXPing no? Some high level fool flags and stabs you in the back? On top of that you were probably fighting a group of trees?
It's all good xD it lead to a night of fun, as little as I got to particpate in it T_T (I must get stronger!!!) I just finally hit 50 last night. Yuria weapon +12 now and offhand +10, armor all +7 at the moment. I've a long wayssss to go
When do people suggest starting to do fail stacks for enchanting? Should I start right after +7 on wep?
I had a ton of fun trying to save Flux in the Rhutums but we got slaughtered lol.
I hate to say it but this game definitely brings back the FFXI feeling of I don't have enough time get to what I want to done. Even something as simple as the dailies, I have to go from Calpheon down to Trent for mobs, then from Trent to Behr for skeletons, then all the way up to Velia to get the Exiles. That's the traveling it doesn't take into account the RNG on quest completion. I'm kinda concerned my leisurely pace won't be able to keep up with scrolls twice a week. I'd hate being the only guy with only 1-2 scrolls collected during the week while others have 5-10.
For those that don't know scrolls are pretty much XI's version of poppable xNMs but the loot is unique for each party member, so everyone gets something from it and you don't lot against others.
Either way the time I do put in i'm loving. I'm working on getting my fishing skill up on my alt. I think i'm going to work up another character to 50 that way I can park their asses in Velia to save me some time while doing the dailies.
