Just came back to this game after a long hiatus (FFXIV POTD is boring right now) and got Witch to 50 and managed to make enough money to buy the new Marine outfit. I love these P2W changes everyone was bitching about. I spent 15mil silver instead of $20-30. LOVE IT.

^This would be ideal. This way people who play wizards can reinvent their characters for that younger phase. Some might see this as overkill but it would be a first I think for immersion in a game like this.

There's a new event for New and Returning players. The 30 day attendance award event is back and features a penguin, free underwear coupon, 4 inventory, 7 day value pack, t5 horse, and boss armor. You can also get daily beer for combat/skill exp buff or energy recovery. In addition the Black Spirits Monopoly event is still running until the 28th and every weekend is a 100% exp buff until all class awakenings are released.

Just got a guest pass over the weekend to give it another go since beta. I think I've picked up a little more than before, was kinda rushed on the beta weekend I played. But does it have anything resembling dungeons in XIV? Not like the duty finder that just throws you in there, I'm fine with having to go somewhere to enter a cave, but something either instanced PvE like XIV or an open world dungeon with quests through it like maybe some of the things in ESO. I haven't been super into PvP in the past (maybe I just need to find the right guild for me) and I dunno how long the trade/life/crafty things will hold me.

No instanced dungeons. There are open world "dungeons" where you can go farm top tier loot, but not like traditional MMO dungeons (trash mobs > boss >gear). Aside from that open world boss zerg/death fests.

Thinking about starting this game. Is it beginner friendly? Or will I have a hard time starting out and catching up?

Well, its 'beginner' friendly in that the lvl exp need to hit 55 is pretty easy these days. 55 is probably the new "soft cap" these days. At lvl 56 you can get your awakening weapon too. However, if all you do is grind you'll be out a lot of energy and contribution points, though you can always go back and focus on those later. on the Orwen server, there are plenty of guilds looking for members, of just about any type. Like all MMORPGs they are more fun with people imo.

In terms of "catching up", you'll be behind in the gear race, but that's really only going to hurt you if you are heavy into PvP.

Wizard Awakening - Young Wizards

Thinking about starting this game. Is it beginner friendly? Or will I have a hard time starting out and catching up?

It's a lot like Eve Online. There's so much shit to do that is super time consuming and the UI is pretty convoluted that you won't feel like doing any of it. The core gameplay is tons of fun (mob grinding) but if you want something deeper than that understand that you'll need to deal with korean-level RNG grind (and sometimes disappointment) and there's hardly any endgame PVE content. World bosses and scrolls (minibosses) pretty much the only PvE content but if you like micromanaging and crafting there's a lot to do there. The game is expansive and beautiful but it feels empty especially if you're not into PVP and node wars.

Edit: Also if you're a cosmetic type of person, if you don't pay or grind away for silver you're stuck with one gearset and look until you either pay up or hope and pray someone puts the costume you want on the market. Once you get an Agerian set (good beginner set) you're stuck with that look until you get world boss armor or grunil armor. That's it, you just use stones to upgrade your weapons and armor pieces after that. There's not much in the way of switching sets.
