I don't understand how a game using a dated engine and no publishing could possibly need 4mil for any of those arbitrary goals, but I congratulate those oldschool videogame dudes for finally getting a nice check after all their work in the industry.

Well, first of all they aren't using the old Infinity engine. They are building a new one from nearly the ground up using the most recent Unity dev-platorm.
Despite no traditional publisher, there's still some legal and organizational costs [office rent, utilities, network infrastructure, version control stuff, licenses for industry programs(a legit studio isn't going to get away with pirating Maya or Photoshop, latest versions aren't free, it costs to stay up to date.)] and remember, Kickstarter takes a cut off the top too.
Any tiers with physical rewards take up some of the money to fulfill, often a surprising amount, as some of the older kickstarters discovered (this is why physical tiers are becoming more expensive).

Then the team has to be paid (for a 18 months worth of work, remember to multiply the yearly salary by 1.5!). Remember, there are two ways to increase content, extend the time with the same size team, or expand the team while holding the time the same. But regardless, BOTH COST MORE MONEY. Any content is more work, and sometimes the most simple little things require more of it than would appear. (Live orchestral instrumentation ain't cheap, the per person may be low-ish because of reasons, but you gotta pay a LOT of them, but boy is there a difference from just using an audio suite.)
And they're in the LA region. You aren't going to get away with paying a professional who works (and probably wants to live nearby, which is Orange County) in the area something to the tune of 25k, it'll be at least twice that (well, unless you're an asshole. Are these guys assholes? I don't see EA signage out front). Sure it might be a cheaper game if they were stationed in Buttfuck Nowhere, Montana, but they aren't. And not everybody there is a Black Isle grizzled old veteran, the guy I know who's on the programming team has only been there since just before Alpha Protocol. He's got student loans to pay down, he doesn't have a pre-bubble mortgage (or paid off) home that lowers his overhead to take a paycut on a chance. And the ones that could have probably filled that overhead with kids, so there goes that.

yeah, a big part gets spend on other things than the game itself. from the 3.4M that double fine got for their adventure, amazon got 5% from every payment and kickstarter took a total 5% after that, which left them 3.1M. manufacturing, storing and shipping the rewards was 470k and another 400k is used for the documentary. so they ended up with 2.2M.

    //edit: numbers after closure:

So as of about 1:30 PM PDT, here’s where we stand funding-wise:
    Kickstarter
    Backers: 73,986
    Pledged: $3,986,929
    PayPal
    Backers: 3,681
    Pledged: $176,279
    Totals
    Backers: 77,667
    Pledged: $4,163,208

    Stretch Goals

So that means we hit the 4M stretch goal, right?
    Yes!
How do PayPal backers affect the Mega Dungeon size?
It counts toward the Mega Dungeon! We hit fifteen (15!!!!) levels!
Will Facebook Likes still count to a larger dungeon?
Yes, for now they do! Come like us quickly and maybe we can hit the 40,000 likes for one last dungeon level. But it’s for a limited time, so… like us! Please note: If you clicked Like on our Eternity home page, that doesn’t qualify – we need likes on Obsidian’s Facebook page!

    Obsidian Announces Partnership with Paradox
Obsidian Entertainment, the developer of Fallout: New Vegas and South Park: The Stick of Truth, today announced that they are entering into a partnership with Paradox Interactive to launch their upcoming role-playing game (RPG), Pillars of Eternity.

Pillars of Eternity, an RPG inspired by classic titles such as Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment, was funded via Kickstarter in late 2012, raising $4.5 million through both backer pledges on Kickstarter and Obsidian’s own website. Feargus Urquhart, CEO of Obsidian Entertainment, stated that every dollar raised through the crowdfunding campaign will be spent solely on the game’s development.

“This game would not have happened if not for the passion and generosity of our backers, and their faith in us to create the game they wanted,” said Urquhart. “How we are developing Pillars of Eternity has not, and will not be, changed; we will deliver the game we promised to our backers, and we will deliver it this year. Having Paradox as a partner, with their expertise in independent games like Pillars of Eternity, lets us put all of our focus on making an incredible game.”

Paradox will assume key marketing and distribution responsibilities for the title, which will support Obsidian by allowing them to concentrate entirely on development.

“When we signed this partnership we called it two independent players in the games industry supporting each other to stay independent by doing what we do best,” said Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. “The fans backing this game—many of us included—are looking forward to a classic RPG as envisioned by the designers at Obsidian, and that’s exactly what they’re going to get.”

Obsidian and Paradox have published a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page for Pillars of Eternity backers, including further details on the new partnership, and on backer rewards, which will remain unchanged.

    And it's out.

If you are a kickstarter backer however, the redemption through Obsidian's site is currently getting hammered.

Been watching some streams, and yes, this is exactly like Baldur's Gate in execution, except you have better graphics, more character options, and more game elements. I'm not sure how replayable it is, or if you can 100% it all in one go, but depending on how they did things, this could be a really massive game.

Jesus Christ, I've only played the actual game for about 30 minutes, but I am absolutely in love. It's just like all the old Infinity Engine games, but now I don't have to vomit at the low res. It's pretty great looking for what it is. I can't wait to really dig into it. Shit, this Bloodborne, not enough time in the day.

Anyone figured out how to set traps, using the Mechanics skill? I'm really just starting out, and disabled some, in the first dungeon, but can' seem to find a way to set them myself.

Open up the inventory sheet on whichever character you want to use it and then look for quick items slots. You should be able to place them then. Gotta be out of combat though
