Loving this game so far. Playing Hearth Orlan Rogue + hired Moon Godkin Fighter chick. Had reservations about the combat at first but after playing it, it's really good, there's a lot of subtle changes compared to games like NWN that make this actually work.

Was watching TB interview the lead programmer yesterday while he was playing the game for the first time, and he said if you do everything the game is like 100 hours long. Having spent like 5 or 6 hours and still being in the first town I can totally believe it at this point

I think the replayability is going to be pretty high. I'm doing everything all goodygoody like and with 12 being the max lvl. There's tons of room for redoing the same class and trying different builds/routes. And certain stats will have different chat options open. Absolutely loving the combat, too.

I'm at 12 hours so far and I havn't even gotten my stronghold yet or anything lol just been focusing on finishing up the first towns quests.

My team is my guy as priest, the fighter companion and the mage companion. Then I made a Paladin chick, a rogue archer and a chanter for buffs/more support. It's a pretty tanky group but it's working out.

    Spoiler: show
I did pretty good killing the crazed mayor dude in the first town. You fight him, 2 shithead 2hander paladins, a priest, mage, another fighter and an archer. I only lost my priest because they FF'd him lol

Once I played long enough in, and disabled a locked chest, it gave me a trap to use. It's confusing to look at the tool-tip, disable all of the traps in the first 'dungeon', and not get any traps to use. Everything else has been fairly intuitive, though there's probably some UI/Mechanics I'm not fully aware of.

Also, Hard is really really hard, if you try to clear the Temple, with just a Fighter and two Mages. >_>; I was able to finish all but three fights and collect everything but one item. I went back, with the chanter and Priest, then wrecked the rest of them. I think I'm going to start over and hire a Rogue and Barbarian as soon as I can, grab the Chanter + Priest, and re-do things without having to pay so much money to get some extra help at the beginning, now that I know more about how hiring adventurers work; only way to get a Barb, Rogue, and Monk too.

You can fix it, and the information, to do so, is in the thread, but you have to know what you lost if you want to restore it.

    Some more info on items:

"Most things do stack in the game only a few don't. To check if something doesn't stack you can open the character sheet and check the ability, if it is greyed out and says (suppressed) then you have a similar or stronger effect already in play."

An example would be, I have my Paladin with a cape that has +5 to will, reflex and fortitude. Then I tried to equip gloves with +5 reflex and the glove bonus became suppressed. Likewise, I tried to equip a ring with +5 will and stats were again suppressed. So, just be aware of equipment

Pathfinding for characters needs a mountain of work, it's downright amazing how bad it is.

Holy crap that's huge. No wonder my group felt a little weak. I just checked my rogue PC and sure enough, Dirty Fighting and my Orlan crit bonus are both gone. This explains why I never noticed my tank's Moon Godlike racial trigger, I had thought it just didn't have an animation or something.

Man, I didn't realize death can be permanent for any character in this game. I was wandering along, my priest died once in combat. Won fight, died again next fight. Bam, perma death.

I mean I don't mind about perma death, but full time story NPC's shouldn't be able to die unless enabled. I'm playing on normal. Guess I'll have to be super careful.

Yeah, they can "die" multiple times but if the health bar, not their portrait health which is endurance, goes all the way down they are perma-dead.

So what kind of parties is everyone using? I'm trying to stick to story characters for an initial playthrough instead of just making companions.

Currently going with Fight, Paladin, Cipher, Ranger, Priest, and Chanter.

My first game I had an MC wizard and story Wizard & Fighter, on Hard Mode.. Took on the Temple and was taken to school on how to play the game; that was a rough experience but I picked up on a lot of nuances of combat.. I re-started, and am currently using an MC wizard, with the Story NPC Fighter, Chanter, and Priest, and I hired a custom Barbarian and a Rogue. The temple was significantly easier, and now Hard mode is actually pretty manageable; I'm able to go and clear content and rarely need to camp. After the first play through, I'll probably go back and try a full custom PT Iron Mode game, if later chapters of Hard Mode don't make things aggravating.

How many characters did you all use in the temple?

The first time, just three, and that was a bitch, and I had to give up on the final two fights. The second time, a full party, and that was pretty easy. You can recruit the Fighter, Mage, Chanter, and Priest all before you go down there; you just have to travel west to your keep, picking up the Priest and Chanter as you go. The mage and fighter are available right as you get to the first town (mage), and just after you examine the female dwarf (fighter), at the tree. You should also have enough gold to recruit two level one characters, from the Inn, especially if you sold the pistol you can find in the tutorial map; might even sneak in a third, depending on what you find/sell at that point.

I went thru playing a couple different characters for an hour or two until settling on something I liked (playing a Wood Elf Ranger w/Bear companion), but I honestly just kind of skip over the temple at the start. It's a bit of a difficulty spike compared to most of the opening content, and much better to wait until you at least have a party of 4, with Eder or some other character to fill in the tank role.

Difficulty curves downward pretty quickly as you fill out your party, though that also obviously comes with more micromanagement being required. Any enemy that can teleport can still fuck you up bad though if he warps into the back row with all your squishy characters.

Ya, it picks up on some fights. I've been on hard, without too much of a problem, since I had a full party, but doing the Cinders of Faith sidequest was a big step up in complexity and danger. The one, big nasty in there, can easily wipe your characters if you don't handle him properly, and he isn't alone either. LVL 6/5 party, at the time, for a reference; maybe that's too low, but the minions were 3-4, so he had to have been my level or higher, since it was a boss-like character. The journal doesn't have stats on them.

There's another game changing bug that has an easy fix. Basically, the bug buffs story NCPs when you save/load a game on the map you recruited them. Erder and Kana are most affected, but others can be, depending on your save/load history. To fix it, use this link and follow the instructions; it's pretty easy to do and I was able to fix my characters and will keep an eye on them. BTW, it asks if you want to install additional software, so just say no/use Custom Install.

it's a pretty bizarre difficulty spike, clearing the Temple with 3 characters was harder than anything else i've done over the next five hours. getting the priest + chanter or hiring goons is p much a must

rolling on hard, p standard so far for IE veterans. looking forward to trying that iron man mode on the playthrough

So for the peeps who are playing, with the current bugs and misc stuff in this game, should I wait until it gets patched and perhaps a Steam sale later on before I purchase it? Or is it so good it demands a buy now?
