Ha! This is a typical day in my office.
Plant manager comes in (He is an accountant by trade) and asks me if we can build a shelf out of cardboard that is waterproof and can carry 600 lbs. I then spend the next 8 months building different revisions that all fail every single time because water and cardboard do not mix....... I am still working on this build because he, and consequently the customer, absolutely refuses to believe that cardboard cannot hold up when soaked in water any more than toilet paper can.

Why not make the cardboard actually waterproof? Use that super hydrophobic spray shit that recently started being sold. If the cardboard never actually gets wet, then it should retain its structural integrity. Granted, making a shelf of cardboard hold 600 lbs is a feat on its own, but at least half that problem is solvable.

There is really a lot more to this than I originally said, but the basic summary is:
#1 It has to be 100% recyclable
It has to hold 600# across 4 shelves
All water resistant material (including glues) have to be water soluble << This is the retarded part
The entire shelf has to have inside dimensions of 42x21x53 with 12" between shelves.
The biggest problem there is that the corrugated mediums are treated with MRA starch at the converter (our paper supplier) before we ever see it. We cannot take apart the corrugated paper and coat it with something else. Here's a picture of the latest iteration. 100% cardboard and it meets all requirements except the waterproofing.

Anyways, this isn't really the thread to complain about my packaging engineering woes. I just watched that video and thought of my boss telling our customers that I can do anything.
