Without making each character a blank slate or self sufficient, you're still going to end up with mages in the party. You'll end up with someone for each trinity role. One warrior, one rogue, and two mages with barrier is probably the easiest setup and I imagine one the most common. Having healing spells, abilities, and potions would make it easier for everyone to use whatever setup they wanted. I gave up on melee rogues because they were always taking random damage from melee attacks and then chugging potions.

All of this ignores the bashable walls, pickable doors, and magic barriers, which still exist (barely, and some of them in a simplified form).
Melee rogues can dish out huge damage, But their ai is just so fucking retarded compared to the enemy Ai. The enemy fucking goes invisible and goes straight for your back line usually attempting to take them out in a single hit or two. What do our melee rogues do? Run right up into the middle of 12 enemys all who are aoeing and then straight up die. No fucking Ai at all.

I've watched mages do the same thing (just run straight into a pack of mobs for no reason), it's definitely not exclusive to Melee AI.

I only noticed this when i gave my MC knight enchanter and i favorited her spirit sword. She would run into the pack and spam that laser. But at least she would keep barrier up while doing it. Rogues have absolutely no way to avoid damage unless you give them a 3 guard on hit weapon or cast barrier on them. I felt that 2 handers had very little ways to build guard as well, but at least it was an option if you were controlling them by blocking hits with their skill. Only problem was that it consumed a fuckton of stamina to keep it up and block hits. balance is this game is a bit wonky between classes. i can understand why they gave "healing spells" a break, but good god. Guard is almighty compared to the barrier IMO. it doesnt expire, and its SUPER easy to keep up for tanks. Barrier you are stuck waiting on a cast and then it degrades in seconds, like really? They could have at least made it last longer. Its bullshit. The barrier ends before enemys even do any damage to you.

I'm not that far (just got Skyhold) but I found you can somewhat mitigate Varric's urge to suicide into everything by getting the first Subterfuge ability and favouriting it.

minor touch, but I noticed when you select a party the cards/art sometimes changes based on events that have happened. don't remember if previous games did anything similar, but I thought it was neat.

I had noticed it but nothing had ever popped up when I hit it. I'll be keeping a closer eye on it now.

It highlights loot and plants, as well as treasure chests and other such findables. When the game wants you to "search" click it for some dumb fucking search and find shit. FYi you have to be literally ON TOP of the item to find it

That's an issue with lower mesh settings. On PC with settings cranked there isn't really any shine, though hair still looks strange compared to everything else on the characters.

Oh huh, I don't remember lowering my settings by that much. I'll have to fix that.

Also each of the areas in this game is so damn big. Always so many quests open I never know where to go. Continuing the main quest for now I guess for the warden dude, but I wanna explore or do the Orlesian court stuff. I'm just afraid of getting shit locked out lol.

I don't believe anything will be locked out until you beat the story or if you have a companion quit.

I just progressed the story until I got Cole and then I started branching out to do side stuff. I don't think anything can get locked out unless you kick a companion out of the Inquisition.

Started my nightmare playthrough as a qunari 2 hander. Was literally running in circles around the pillar at the start with the pride demon trying to revive people and do that damn rift. Kept running around the corner and parrying the asshole demons who would spawn because luckily it knocks them down to buy me time.

    Ending:

    Spoiler: show
Soo.. I think next playthrough I'm going to use Solas as my mage for everything so I don't miss what happens with him. My warrior chick ended up drinking from the well and he was PISSED at me when I talked to him. Morrigan was mad but after seeing Flemeth says she's happy I ended up drinking from it lol I ended up stupidly leaving hawke to die in the fade and Stroud hasn't come back from Weischapt or whatever the grey warden place is. Supposedly there's a civil war going on now. Or something. Not sure how I feel about everything. I think an issue games like this or mass effect have is that none of the choices I seem to make *really* matter.

So yeah Knight Enchanter is insanely powerful. At level 20 I just managed to almost solo the level 23 high dragon in Emprise Du Lion area using nothing but spirit blade and the occasional ice attack. Rest of the party was dropped on the dragons first breath attack. Just kept my barrier up using spirit blade and eventually whittled his health down along with about a dozen of the little runts that come in to help him.

Spirit Blade + Fade Shield + another mage with Rejuvenating Barrier + Clean Burn = good luck, enemies.

Doing the Winter Palace story quest. Unlike some other people, I love games like DA for the character interaction so I'm loving this whole section. One annoying thing though it looks like I've found all 11 Halla statues but theres still a couple doors (the ones you have to choose between) that I can't open. How was I to know there wouldn't be enough to go around D:

For anyone so inclined, there are a couple places where the skill point Amulets pop in chests that you can basically farm with a bit of running. Varric has one that can respawn in Valammar (entrance is in the Hinterlands), it pops in one of the chests in the final room where all the Darkspawn flood out, after the door you open with the two gears. After you kill the Darkspawn, open the chest in the back left, only take the Amulet (there's also a Bianca Arms III I think, but you need to leave it so the chest refreshes), open the other door with the crank, and then you can just run back and forth to the Hinterlands to keep respawning the amulet.

There's one for Dorian in the zone where you had to drain the lake but I haven't gone looking for it yet. I'm sure all the other party members have one that's farmable as well.
