Besides, we need to give these kids in the age range of 12-16 something to do besides watch Jersey Shore (final season from my understanding thank god), steal prescription drugs, and watch too much MTV without the M.

I really liked the debate. Found myself, obviously agreeing with Stewart in the end, but thinking to myself "O'Reilly can actually defend some of these points pretty well..." I agree with O'Reilly completely on the whole waterboarding/drones issue.
Also, I see the benefit in having mandatory service for people of age. I've actually never really heard a good argument in favor of a draft till this debate tbh. ;o
Compulsory service is not good for a country that goes around touting "protection of our freedoms" as the reason our military exists. Suddenly freedom is no longer if you are forced to serve in the armed forces.
If, as others have mentioned, the service requirement was broad enough to accommodate those that don't want to serve on the armed forces, it could work. It would take a generational shift in attitude and entitlement beliefs or a major disaster/attack on American soil to bring people around to thinking it is a good idea to serve your country/state.
I dont mind the idea and i think most people could benefit from two years of structured service out of high school, especially if it will come with two years of free education but this countries youth are entirely too spoiled for it to ever happen.
You would have plenty of freedom - a freedom of choice! Do you want to serve in the armed forces or do you want to serve among the plethora of available social/community services? You don't HAVE to do the service, just like you don't HAVE to have health insurance, but you won't receive any benefits (assuming that there is a good benefit monetarily or otherwise for doing said service).
As long as there were 1) a good number of options and 2) real freedom of choice between them then it could be a good idea.
Don't fucking make me laugh guys. I know you 'Merica fuck yea people believe in military, but some people don't even think military should exists. I personally flee a country that had mandatory service and can never go back because of it, and now you want to do that to others in your country? lol fuck you.
Military teaches discipline and leadership? Give me a break. Like standing around getting treated like shit by an asshole will teach you anything. Those military "leaders" are a waste of space. I guess if you want leaders who are so morally corrupt that can run shit like Guantanamo, then the military is just for you!
coward
yawn
gonna have to side with the idea that if it's mandatory can't be military onry. Logically, we need military, but I think I'd go insane if I were in a position where I kill people or assist in helping others kill people.
Wasn't there supposed to be a mandatory civil service for students when Obama was elected (or campaigning)? I thought it was a great idea, stuff like Habitat for Humanity and the like. I'm guessing it was never implemented beyond its proposal.
Silly camel doesn't understand that civil service doesn't mean military. Its insane how retarded the people shat out from a land of pedophile worshipping, women hating terrorists can be. I understand where you come from civil service means stone the nearest rape victim and then strap on a a bomb and head to town but that is not how it goes here. Go comb your beard hachmed. Real people are talking.

you wouldn't anyway, unless Israel.
The cost would be incredibly high to train every single person ever, the military path of something like this would be more like Basic Training, AIT, released -> Reserves type situation (once a year, month, idk) You wouldn't have a hand in ridding the world of dirty ass camel fuckers.
I'd like to see something like a mandatory year in service, military or public with two years earning as many years in education or something.
Nobody wants to sit down a sign the social contract anymore, I believe getting people involved in the the affairs of their nation could only be a boon, I don't understand this argument that it's limiting freedom.
Easy for me to say being over 18 I guess, but there you have it.
