Devil's advocate or not - the two situations are not exactly comparable.
Anyways, I took a trip down memory lane and wow... Look how slow combat used to be at 1:23. >.>
Oh god, I hardly even remember how terrible it was.
I don't think we give Yoshi and his team enough credit. Look at what we have now and whats on the horizon for ARR... Worlds better. lol
*cough*
http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/08...relaunch-a-re/Yoshida was quick to point out that players will have plenty of warning ahead of the shut down (consider this your first heads up). He also notes that the original game's userbase will be prioritized in A Realm Reborn's beta queue, and that players will "be able to use their current characters in the beta test as well." Though that may not be at the kickoff of the beta, he says, "we're working in a way to try to get it as close to the beginning of the beta test as possible."
No coughs; the fact that it was even an issue is hilarious. 1.0 crashed and burned to the ground, their stock plummeted, heads were put on the chopping block, and SE's back is to the wall regarding 2.0, and people are more concerned with making damned sure that they have their 1.0 character for beta over, you know... actually talking about making sure that the game will actually be the best that it can be.
Fucking priorities.
People are concerned we're going to be testing the basic mechanics on low levels in the beta and wind up being served a shit-banquet of end game content come launch.
Sound familiar?
From what I saw it was only Cichy's comment that caused the whole silly progress saving topic you seem to be so enraged about.
What more of us cares is having access to high level characters to test other content than the starting areas. You know, to make the game better.
You think the only flaw with 1.0 was the end-game content at launch? The game would have been fine with shitty end-game content at launch if the game was a polished and enjoyable experience. Need evidence? Just look at GW2. The Beta should be about ensuring that the game is polished and enjoyable, not that end-game runs flawlessly. This is doubly important seeing as how its not like people are going to be doing end-game content on Day 1 of launch, but -will- be experiencing the rest of the game on Day 1 launch - the latter of which was completely shitty in 1.0's Day 1 launch, leading to a flop of a game. Come the fuck on; this is not rocket science.
@Gokulo: Again, point to a single example of a modern MMO that allowed free beta testers that were not in-house to test end-game content prior to a launch. You can talk about how much better it makes a game until you are blue in the face, but the reality of the situation is that it simply Just. Does not. Happen.
SE is treating 2.0 as if 1.0 never happened, in terms of how they're releasing the game. This isn't some expansion pack like with WoW where they put the PTR up and people can douche around in the upcoming instances. Did anyone get to test Molten Core content before Vanilla WoW was launched? Were people fighting Greenscale in Rift's beta prior to launch? Did anyone do more than kill The Shatterer in GW2's beta?
Show me some evidence before you start talking about what SE should do.
Edit: Trust me, I wouldn't mind some endgame testing, but focus on the priorities, people. The 100% main priority is an enjoyable game, not flipping fantastic end-game content. End-game content can be easily patched in. How easily could/did SE patch in an entire workaround of their shitty main systems?

Interesting article.
Except in this case they will. Even if not experiencing it on day 1, they will have access to it sine day 1 and do it pretty soon. You are really going crazy over some issue you just imagined. We just don't want end-game to be ignored in the testing. That doesn't mean ignoring everything else. End-game is a part of an enjoyable game, hell, one can argue end-game consists the majority of that. We all know there is a lot of important stuff to be fixed, but no, in this case patching end-game later is not an good option.
Whether they port your high level character and whether you can test endgame areas/content is not necessarily related. They could (and probably will) lock access to content/areas they don't want you to see. On the other hand if everything is accessible and they want everything to be tested, they could let you use premade characters.
Imo, the only benefit in porting characters is being able to bitch sooner about how you lost half of your items and quests during the data transfer even though you weren't supposed to lose anything.
Damn, you really have an hard-on for that.
Keep missing the point over and over. I only stated what I feel to be the best course of action for beta since we will get to use our characters. Sorry that hurt you so much. I still don't get why are you so stuck-up about leaving end game out of testing, but you are free to feel like that. Maybe they will leave all end-game out, maybe not, I'll have it either way.
I just find it funny, because I only pointed out that the character transfer was a confirmed fact when you were somehow complaining that people are crying that it won't happen. And then you started going off about a totally different topic.
I think the important thing that everyone is missing here is...
October is going to be a loooooooong month. I don't even get why we're "playing" at this point, in regards to story.
I heard we're getting some new interviews this week, better be good, TGS was disappointing.
The problem with not testing high level content in Betas is that developers always underestimate how fast players will hit cap once the game is released. In every game I've played in beta > release its always been low level content polish, with the assumption that end game can be patched later...then "later" comes up within 3-4 days and everyone starts bitching about endgame and subs plummet.
Yes, early level polish is important. But imo you should have a longer general beta, with a smaller closed endgame beta as well, just so your endgame isn't fucked within the first week.
