Considering I never read what most of you post, and I remember reading Yoshi saying that we would get access to our characters in beta, I'm not sure what the discussion is about.

It's obvious they need to test the character-data transfer... so it's a given that's why they'll give us access to our characters in the beta.
People just gettin' mad at the potential of their beta progress not being saved... which should be expected.
Only game I know thats going to allow you to convert open beta to live is Path of Exile because the beta was like 10$ or some shit.
I wonder how people gonna react to the new battle system. Besides the action lock and few minor flaws I actually enjoy the current system.
Well, Cichy is a moron then.
Now that that's out of the way, that's not the reason.
I can understand it being questionable in this case. How many MMOs have had the game running for two years and then went back into beta? FFXIV is unique here so I wouldn't rule out progress being saved, at least from open beta.
The point of being able to play our chars in the beta isn't to make progress, I don't care if it's lost at the end of beta.
The point is to at least get a taste of the end game content and give SE some feedback on whether or not they done fucked up before it actually launches.
When the game re launches a huge portion of the playerbase will be at max level, if we don't have refined, fun, challenging content to do there's gonna be trouble.
The point is probably to test the item conversion, actually.
i'd go ahead and assume there's no way progress would be saved from beta to re-release simply because some huge exploits could and probably will exist in the beta, why would they ever let that spill over into final?
I want to see the BETA just to see how great it will be, I want to test shit out and try to break shit.
All this endgame argument is pointless, want to know why?
Most people blaze through that shit in a new MMO starting from scratch, people will start out as 50 in 2.0, blow through all the content in like 2-3 weeks then be bored. The endgame is going to be some very basic shit at release, I rather play it slowly this time instead of counting down the days until a patch puts out new content.
Hmm I assumed data WOULD get transferred from Current -> Beta -> Re-release and that this was because they are putting the re-release date further and further back. The two announcements were suspiciously close together. I fully expect to be playing 'beta' for months if not a year (didn't they say re-release is now Q3 2013 or something? "Probably not as late as Christmas" or some crap? Plus they wouldn't have made such a song a dance over keeping the current servers online and NOT porting data to v2.0 if beta data wasn't being ported either.
Personally, don't care if beta is short and 2.0 isn't far behind. If beta goes on for months and months and progress is lost, then I'll probably log into beta a handful of times.

I'll try and dig out the quote - basically someone spoke to a rep at a booth at one of the recent shows and asked when 2.0 was expected (realistically). The rep laughed and said "next year, but hopefully not as late as Christmas or anything". Since then, Yoshi has repeatedly said they won't rush the release and that they want to 'get it right' after the fiasco that was 1.0 launch.
I work in software dev and this sounds like the kind of excuses we make all the time- I don't expect 2.0 to be out any time soon, I think the 'beta' will be long hence expecting char data to get ported from beta.
Seems a shame - until recently I figured they were pretty much on-schedule.
They were, now alpha has been moved a bit, but we still don't know how it will affect the whole thing. Previously, realistically we were expecting it to hit around march, but yeah, it might move a bit now.
I'm gonna be honest, the thing that's gonna make or break me is how they react to the player base providing them input. If it's like it is now, then I probably won't play.
And that shit damn near breaks my heart![]()
I'd like to think they've done what they can to appease us with the current engine but between the current engine being shit and 2.0 taking priority, most of their efforts are being put toward meeting player requests for the 2.0 engine.
Why put money into fixing up the crumbling building you're about to bulldoze anyway when you could put it into the new house you actually plan on keeping.
I think they could have done better with support for V1. Perfect example here. I just logged in 5 minutes ago for the first time in like 3 days, get through 10 full market wards (trying to find a spot for my retainer) only for my game to crash and shut down when I try changing to the next ward. There hasn't been any retainer slots in the Ul'dah market wards every time I've checked since the server merge. That shit wouldn't be too difficult to fix either. They've just let 1.x rot apart from the odd content patch, which is fair enough if they aren't charging for it but they are. The sooner this tripe is shut down for good the better.
