Time and Eternity/ Toki to Towa

Just got officially confirmed for english release, set to release next year. Seems pretty interesting, so figured I'd try and make thread for it.

Imageepoch CEO Ryoei Mikage has said on Twitter that the English version of Toki to Towa will arrive in 2013.

Asked by a fan if the overseas release is due next year, he simply responded, “Yes!” I pressed him for further clarification, to which he also responded with a yes.

A bit of quick info, more can be found here: http://gematsu.com/tag/toki-to-towa

The high-definition quality anime in the game is moving, according to Imageepoch. The game will keep a consistent anime-style throughout, rather than simply shift during event scenes. It’s an HD 2D animation RPG, which uses animated sprites for characters and monsters, and 3D cel-shaded backdrops.
As detailed earlier, the game is and RPG published by Namco Bandai and in development at Imageepoch in collaboration with animation studio Satelight. Taiwanese illustrator Vofan is designing the characters, and legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro is doing the score.

The game is set in the Kamuza Kingdom, a nation formed through the marriage of a prince – the player character – and princess – a girl named Toki. They live in a castle town that floats just above the water.

The prince, whose name is set by the player, is 18 years old and voiced by Tsubasa Yonaga (Jude Mathis in Tales of Xillia). Though he’s married, he’s still yet to have his first kiss. Toki, who can wield magic, is 16 years old and voiced by Kana Hanazawa (Mayuri Shīna in Steins;Gate). She has a blue pet dragon named Drake who always stays at her side.

The game is the “the world’s first HD animation RPG,” according to a blurb in the mag. Throughout the field and in battle, the game uses hand-drawn 2D animation for the characters and enemies, and 3D for the backgrounds.

In addition to story and graphics details, the article includes comments from some of the game’s key staff.

Kay Hirono, the game’s producer at Namco Bandai, told Famitsu the game has been in development for over two years. He promises a completely new RPG.

Imageepoch CEO Ryoei Mikage revealed that in order to get Toki to Towa working on PlayStation 3, they went through much trial and error. He originally planned the project long ago, with a desire to show 2D anime running on a game system.
The Imageepoch-developed RPG is described by Yoshizumi as sexy, serious, and comical. It is centered around the theme of “time,” though “marriage” is also an important keyword.

In battle, you will not select commands from a list. It will be action-oriented. The element of “time” will also play a surprising role.

Imageepoch has not made plans to turn Toki to Towa into a series, according to Yoshizumi, however, they would not like it to end. He believes the team is doing something incredible with the project.

A few trailers from oldest to newest, believe 2nd, 3rd, and 4th are gameplay trailers.

Not entirely sure if I like this. It's a novel idea, but it just looks weird to me. Also, I know I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but I'm pretty sure I've seen this story and these characters already lol

Combat sound effects sound so weird and out of place, lol. I like the idea, not sure I like the implementation. I'm guessing the weird angle is to try to make a 2D character work in a 3D world?

Imageepoch’s largest project was a HD anime RPG made for PlayStation 3. You may know it as Toki to Towa or by its translated name Time and Eternity. Either way, we’re talking about the same gorgeous looking game, which will be called Time and Eternity when it gets localized.

Namco Bandai spilled the beans when they filed a trademark for Time and Eternity in Europe.

On Twitter, CEO Ryoei Mikage expressed interest in brining Time and Eternity outside of Japan. Looks like it’s going to happen, the questions are now when and who is going to handle the game overseas.

I was gonna order this but two of my friends told me not to. Didn't take their word for it, so I looked around for more reviews. Every thread I saw said it was terrible and apparently it was even nominated for worst game of the year in Japan...

Time and Eternity, Namco Bandai and Imageepoch’s hand-drawn animation RPG, is coming to North America and Europe this summer courtesy of NIS America.

The game opens in Kazma, a “vibrant kingdom” on a “lush ocean island,” in the midst of a national event celebrating the upcoming marriage of the princess Toki to a valiant knight. But assassins appear at the ceremony and murder the knight, causing the princess to reveal her hidden secret—a second soul lives within her, and together they can travel through time. Her second self now revealed, the two travel back to track down the knight’s killer.

    The game’s key features include:

A new class of high-def animation RPG!: From world to battle to enemies—everything is hand-drawn with beautiful CG backgrounds! Experience RPGs like you’ve never seen before!
Time is on your side: You hold the key to your own fate! Go back in time, prevent your own murder, and save your marriage! And help all the citizens of Kamza along the way!
Real-time battle: Prepare for lightning-quick real-time battle! Each heroine has her specialties, so use them wisely to blaze a path to victory!
Take the fight to the enemy: Take hold of swords, guns, and even time itself! Tailor your gear and skills to suit your playstyle, and unleash your fury!

A “variety” of download content is also planned post-release.
    General

The First HD Animation RPG: Characters in Time and Eternity are all drawn using cel-animation, meaning they are neither sprites nor 3D models. The graphic style is unique to this game and completely new!
World Setting: The kingdom of Kamza was founded by a king who conquered the world, and a queen who is a powerful magician. This beautiful kingdom was built on an island overlooking the sea. The game’s story begins at the wedding ceremony between the hero and the princess Toki.

    Characters

Protagonist: Despite appearances, the protagonist isn’t quite the gentlemen he should be. He is an 18-year-old knight of Kamza. He is marrying the princess of Kamza, Toki, but the ceremony is suddenly disrupted by a group of assassins. The protagonist is mortally wounded in this battle and in order to save his own life he…
Toki: Toki is the princess of Kamza and the bride at this wedding. She has been anxiously awaiting this day, but the ceremony is suddenly interuppted… She has a pet dragon named Drake. Her expertise is range combat using the musket, but she is also able to do hand-to-hand combat.
Towa: Towa is Toki’s alternate personality. Towa is first unleashed when her wedding is ambushed. Unlike Toki, Towa is direct and aggressive. When this personality surfaces, her hair color changes from red to blonde. Unlike her dual personality Toki, Towa is a close combat expert. Her weapon of choice is knives, and she has various special skills for it. Switch between the two personalities depending on the enemy’s weakness.

    Dual Personalities

You can switch Toki’s personality to Towa, and vice-versa, each time you level up, and also by using the “Pepper” item. However, this is a rare item, so you’ll want to carefully consider when to switch between the two.

    Battle Preparation

Time and Eternity adopts an encounter system and a real-time battle system. Once in battle, the enemy will attack whether or not you take any action. Therefore, speed and timing become important strategies. Prepare before you encounter an enemy by setting up your attack commands. You can assign various skills to each of the face buttons on your controller. By pressing the corresponding buttons, you can execute skills and combo attacks.

    Battle System

Unlike ordinary turn-based RPGs, Time and Eternity has some action elements in its battle system. For instance, in a normal RPG, if an enemy is about to smash its fist down on Toki, you would normally simply sit and watch what the AI does. But in Time and Eternity, you can control your character and try to dodge the enemy attack. Try to make Toki successfully jump to the side and avoid the punch.

The dodge ability can be executed by simply pressing either the right or left directional button. You have to be careful, because dodging at the wrong time will leave you open to enemy attacks.

    Skills

As you progress through the game, you will learn to execute various offensive and defensive skills. An example: a ranged combat skills that throws an energy blast at the enemy. Not only can Toki and Towa use attack skills as seen below, but also skills that can control the flow of time.

It's been getting horrible, horrible reviews. What a waste of really great art assets. Still, I kept my preorder because I have a NIS problem.

    Should we start a support group or something? I always get their preorders, on games I don't even care about ;;

Ya, not seeing how this goes anywhere; why would Bandai release this when they already complain about foreigners not buying their games? Are they looking for fodder to not release their Tier 1 games?

This is one of the few games that NISA has brought over here that I have no interest in touching until it ends up in a bargain bin.

Decided to pass on this myself, I'll eventually try it later on, probably months from now. I was gonna get this to pass time till Dragon's Crown, but DW8 will hold me over till then, that and Tiny Tina DLC which I'm just now getting around to playing.
