Because Abyssea was seen as the "retirement expansion" for FFXI. Until FFXIV foundered. Easymode exp, gil, and a rather straightforward process to get the best gear available. Once it became no longer a "we're just gonna let it rot while FFXIV sucks all it's players away", fixing (or cutting out) the problems it caused became needed.

Sweeping RME's out of the picture sounds like one effective method of curing that, by simply rendering the content farmable for components, at best.

Personally I'm hoping that if the plan is to give out the RME weapon skills and stats they have a tiered progression about it, especially since they made the 90-99 jump very rocky. Note that this isn't an endorsement for or against this method, just thoughts on what they should do if they do this method. All bonuses would require the weapon then some form of quest, and obviously wouldn't include the Shield/Harps.

Here is an example list, obviously it would be subject to some balancing, especially with the differences between Relics. Obviously the stat bonuses would not stack with carrying the weapon.

    • 99 Coin Weapon - Weapon Skill
    • 90 Empyrean - Weapon Skill
    • 95 Empyrean - Weapon Skill + Aftermath
    • 99 Empyrean - Full Stat Bonuses
    • 75 Relic - Weapon Skill
    • 90 Relic - Attack or Accuracy Bonus (at level 90)
    • 95 Relic - Weapon Skill + Aftermath + Upgraded Attack or Accuracy Bonus
    • 99 Relic - Full Stat Bonuses
    • 95 Mythic - Aftermath
    • 99 Mythic - Full Stat Bonuses
    • 99 Afterglow - Afterglow

I think that a list such as this would service the most players while still giving incentive to take the weapons as far as possible.

A tiered progression is a pretty good idea. There are way too many 90 Emps to leave them hanging and 90-99 upgrades are only going to get harder and harder to accomplish. The same can be said of 95 Relics.

Am I the only one who thinks that having weapon-specific stats translate over to any given weapon is ridiculous?

    WS translation? sure.

    Aftermath translation? maybe.

Taking everything but the name off of the weapon and having it interchangeably float in your hands regardless of what you're actually holding? Really?

You're not alone, I already pointed out the biggest flaw in that system- it would require every single person with relevant RME to obtain the respective 99 weapon. I think even AM translation would be a really bad idea.

Before anybody answers that with "wasn't that the situation we were in before", consider, for example, WAR. Every single weapon will need to be 99'd on that job- you want the accuracy from Bravura. You want the AM from Conqueror. You want the STR from Ukon.

As much as it would give completionists a huge boner it would also exacerbate a problem I think they were trying to solve (everyone needing to spend 3 months on one fucking item to be relevant in the endgame community)

RMEs are the radioactive spider that makes us Spiderman, obviously. The venom just needs time to work.

I wouldn't mind it if they were to release battles that were tied to unlocking the weaponskill that is bound to the weapon, and then release suped up versions of what we have available currently and would give them.

Mythic owners would return to Balhran and present the weapon back to him with all the upgrades they've made to it and he'll teach you how to unlock the true potential of the weaponskill and give an augment to it that has a minor chance to always attack 2 - 3 times on the first hit.

Relic owners would return to the spot that they acquired their Relics and display the upgrades and knowledge in attempts to master the weapons they were given, again a fight but with the original owners of the relic they are wanting to fully unlock, and in return learn the true potential of the weaponskill and able to use it without the relic itself, giving the user after they use it, a minor chance to deal x2 - x3 damage.

Empyrean owners, I don't know. There really isn't much lore tied to them that would fit anything like above, I guess enter a BC w/ up to 6 others to assist and take on the NMs that you fought in Abyssea to build your weapon, obv no atma/cruor buffs and then the final NM to spawn would be a Shinryu.

Personally I've always thought they should've given a II version of every RME WS at 99, but I guess that's just me dreaming big.

I always thought that that should've happened with at least Mythics though, because for WSs that are supposed to be representative of the job the only one that's ever really impressed me visually is Death Blossom.

This is why I have trouble just endorsing it as a good idea to have the weapon upgrades fly into other weapons, although I'd say that getting the STR from Ukon and the AM from Conqueror would be less realistic then the Relic. Additionally you have the problem of jobs not on Relics or Empyreans not getting some boost (such as Geomancer not being able to get the extra HP and MP from being on Gambateinn). It also doesn't address some weapons being better then others for certain job roles (melee Summoners might love having the effects of Claustrum, but this doesn't help nuke happy Black Mages as much, especially when they could go for the weapon skill on Hvergelmir). Then you have differences of power between certain weapon's additional effects. I mostly just think it is a better solution then some all or nothing upgrade players get for having the weapon at 99.

Of course, you could have Relics and Empreans have weapon skills at 75/85 with the aftermath at 99, then stack it on with the buffs from the weapons only working for their respective weapon skill (and scaling with the weapon's power). I'd still have Mythics give their full buffs, maybe short of the aftermath, unless they are made significantly easier to obtain.

Any more news on that article? Google Translate is pretty terribad at putting what they're talking about elegantly, but I saw mention of Run merits farther down, as well as some discussion concerning Geo being tweeked to better compare to Brd and Cor. The Skirmish piece info, though nowhere near as useful as it woulda been pre-Age of Judgement, is still an interesting, and perhaps helpful once Skirmish get's its third zone added, and perhaps reasons to care about it along with it.

Was mostly asking about the Delve section on the second page but nice to know about Skirmish segments. Second page also seemed to hinting at a special 11th FFXI anniversary event? Hope they bring it to the States even if its in CA.

Uncontested for casting meteor or your mijin gakure macro? Well sure.

great axe, great katana, pup h2h, club, dnc dagger, spear, pld sword, smn staff; these are (well were) all fine I guess(although the last two are kind of pushing it), as for the others:

    Spoiler: show
mnk h2h: did this out damage emp/relic? no. did it augment anything useful? no.
blm staff: only useful for meteor, and meteor itself isn't useful so...
rdm sword: convert augment is not helpful. macc on a sword is not helpful.
thf dagger: boosts SA and TA.. except the good SA and TA ws are exclusive to relic/emp.
scythe: absorbs suck for a lot of reasons. scythe sucks without catastrophe.
bst axe: useful when pets damage matters, but yours doesn't, and pet survivability also isn't important... umm
brd dagger: increases song duration, but what else do your brds have to do? i guess this makes dualboxing your brd mule easier?
rng crossbow: i don't think I need to say anything about this one.
katana: the best weapon to kill yourself with.
blu sword: theoretically decent for soloing things with it's giant mp return.. except there weren't any situations where this was really relevant. i can't think of any content i could have done better with tizona than almace.
cor gun: great for fighting a long list of things that are resistant to both fire and physical damage.
    sch staff: uhhhh

I mean yeah, almost all of them are technically the best for something, but that something is mostly irrelevant, and generally not worth even swapping weapons for. Would you really make anything from that second list if not as an epeen/trophy weapon?

If you're taking full advantage of Mandalic's attack boost, then it shouldn't be too bad.

BRD Dagger is completely fine and mule brds are the future! Liberator was very strong if you didn't have cor buffs but had BRD iirc. BLM staff was also optimal when you were able to maintain AM2.

I get the other two, but how the heck does a BLM maintain AM2? Dusty Wing + that refresh torque?

I was gonna make a comment about occult acumen...but meh. If you get 5TP per 100MP spent, it would cost 4k mp to get 200% TP. Around 2800MP if you use oneiros rope, still not exactly a friendly number.

    @Kincard
thats pretty much it, use a wing, then drain TP.

rng has potential maybe. But our understanding of ranged delay and distance penalties on pdif leave a bit to be desired. Plus has anyone tested the snapshot on it? Not like most the snapshot testing was all that well done from what I've heard
