My older sister is non-religious. I don't know if she would consider herself atheist or not but she certainly doesn't belong to any organized religion. Her husband is catholic and his family is pretty devout. They make it work in their own way. It is not impossible for it to work but both people have to be really open and loving to the other persons feelings and space. You can't be an aggressive church person or atheist and be with someone who is opposite. You have to be able to take a live and let live stance to your partners beliefs. And they have to be able to do the same for you.
