Intestines are highly highly individualized, which means that what bothers one person might actually help another person. There are some things that simply act a certain way chemically, like sugar, which in high doses can induce diarrhea, but generally there is no generally.

Pasta and cheese form the core of my diet because they never bother me. Other Crohnies can't have either. Processed foods bother me to an extent. I can do some processed foods but i have to be careful about the quality. generally, higher quality brands are safer. also, they often have "X free!" type products, which i can take advantage of. my biggest problem is greasy/fatty/heavy foods.

    Grits?

Was gonna get a big container of oatmeal, but for the same price of the 2 lb oatmeal was a bag of 5 lb grits

Never heard anything unhealthy about grits. But if you put a ton of butter and syrup on the top, all bets are off.

You should also note that with grits the water/grits ratio is like 8/1. So, 5 pounds is going to make a shit ton more than 2 pounds of oats

doing well so far. thanks to panda again for that awesome, easy-to-follow list. I have it up on my fridge and consult it every time I make a meal plan. I'm sticking mostly to A and B foods but also trying not to obsess; better to stick to an imperfect-yet-healthy diet than to try for perfection and give up.

my meals before were almost all fast food (albeit some of it relatively healthy like chipotle or subway), frozen food, boxed food, and TONS of cheese. I fucking ate cheese on everything.

    now it's
    - breakfast: greek yogurt with oats and berries
    - post-workout snack: fruit with peanut butter
    - lunch: some sort of protein and veggie combination
    - dinner: lunch's leftovers
    - random snacks throughout the day: reduced fat string cheese, greek yogurt, fruit, roasted almonds, cottage cheese with reduced fat triscuits + honey and cinnamon (delicious)

it's not perfect but it's worlds apart from the frozen and boxed foods I used to eat constantly. still a work in progress, and I'll add variety as I become more comfortable cooking on my own, but so far I'm proud didn't think I could do this!

I've heard conflicting reports on the health effects of saturated fats, so I feel more comfortable limiting them than not. I haven't totally cut cheese out though - all things in moderation. the guideline I really like is "use cheese to flavor a dish, not as a main feature of the dish."

lol. I would have done that back in the day, though...

I'm gonna pick up some feta tonight. I'm not immune to the charm of mutated milk.

That's true, I will be honest that I am on a crusade to clear the good name of saturated fat. And if you're going to eat dairy please don't eat the low fat versions since the fat is where all the good shit is. Just eat a stick of kerrygold butter.

I'm on week 2 of giving up soda right now because I did the math and I was spending 70+ fucking dollars a month on soda. That's not even hammering it all the time, that's just getting one on the way to work and one on the way home. Doing the math and averaging up three months worth of spending Soda caught my eye as the easiest thing to cut.

It's been hard as hell since that's 10+ years of behavior I'm going against, but I've seen a difference. I'm annoyed that juice is so freaking expensive. Working on getting better food too, but that's a difficulty/story of a different level because I'm poor + no teeth (yet, fucking dentist).

fruit juice is probably almost as bad as soda so don't be too annoyed with the expense
