When you said Fruit Juice, do you mean squash? (Concentrated stuff, add a little, then add a big portion of water)

I cut off all sorts of fizzy drinks, and I only have at most 1 cup of squash and approximately half 250ml of a smoothie (the ones that claim to give you 2 of your 5 day in veg).... money wise, I guess I'm saving. The smoothie is more of a treat, drunk in moderation. The squash, £2 for a 1L bottle that lasts me 2-3 weeks. I guess you could say I'm saving.

Not familiar with Squash.... this is what I am referring to when I say fruit juice:

You could argue it's no better than soda due to the higher % of fructose in the sugar it does contain. Much better to stick to water and just eat actual fruit.

If your smoothies are vegetable type deals then that is something completely different. With soda and fruit juice we are primarily concerned with the fructose consumption that can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and several other issues.
Think for example that a healthy adult male who trains regularly can consume about 50g of fructose per day without issue, that is a bit over two 12oz cans of coca-cola. For a female it will be even less. I really don't think there's any need to ever consume fructose outside of fruit.

And just to temper my position on fructose consumption and HFCS in general which is interesting to many:
    http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/res...ch-review.html
    Quoting from the paper:
Sucrose, HFCS, invert sugar, honey an many fruits and juices deliver the same sugars in the same ratios to the same tissues within the same time frame to the same metabolic pathways. Thus…it makes essentially no metabolic difference which one is used.
So, again, while HFCS is certainly a source of calories (and many HFCS containing foods are easily overconsumed), there is nothing special about HFCS that makes it uniquely problematic. Fruit juice or a sucrose containing soda would function identically in the body.

Grape Juice can cause diarrhea. So if you're having issues with loose/frequent stools, that's a good thing to stop eating, along with sugar in general. Grape juice is particularly strong in that regard, though.

Since that's where most of my experience with diet modification is, I figure I should speak up when I see something relevant.

I still drink orange juice, but stick to this stuff in sparing amounts as a mixing medium for smoothies, about 1 cup per.

I hate tomatoes but had a few salads over the few weeks (lol like one a week) and decided to put some in there anyways. That being said, I'm not chewing them at all, so I don't get the taste or the juices in my mouth. As long as it makes it to the stomach, no problem with just swallowing chunks of tomato?

that sounds horrible lol. Don't eat them at all if you're just going to swallow them whole! Someone else could have enjoyed those tomatoes, or maybe the rats out back could eat them.

I avoid processed stuff as much as I can. If it comes in a box that you microwave, no thanks. I stick to fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grain breads, low sodium cuts of meat, fish, brown rice.

Does sodium have an effect on weight loss? Cause I put a lot of salt on food that I eat. D:

I'd also recommend if you're trying to lose weight, also cut out bread. People might say use whole wheat, but just give it up cold turkey. It will save you calories, cut back on bloat, and more.

One thing that has helped me this year is a consistent breakfast. I usually make oatmeal, either a half cup of steel cut oats or a cup of rolled oats (rolled oats are much faster to make when I'm in a hurry). That's about 300 to 350 calories, but it keeps me feeling full much longer than other meals. High in fiber (both soluble and insoluble), no sugar, no salt, decent amount of protein, and a good amount of vitamins and minerals. Luckily I enjoy the flavor of plain oats, when you start adding tons of sugar it's not much better than the boxed cereals with all the additives. Occasionally I'll add a tablespoon of honey or a 1/4 cup of raisins if I'm going to the gym early, but keep in mind that those small amounts add about 17 g of sugar and close to 100 calories.

That brings up another important habit: keep an accurate tracking of what you eat. You will be amazed where so many calories come from in your diet that you may not have thought about before. Like Franzer said, cut out breads. Or at least cut back.

Yes, sodium is one of the factors that contribute to water retention, or 'water weight.' However, there are many health problems associated w/ excessive amounts of sodium intake (heart failure) that you should be more worried about. Salt is not bad, just don't abuse it.

I usually have oatmeal for breakfast too and what I add is a couple dashes of pumpkin spice. The cinnamon & allspice have the added benefit of bolstering your immune system as well.
Also, for weight loss, if you're looking for a sweetener without glucose/fructose, calories, or additives, I really recomend trying stevia, Krisda in particular as the fillers are just chicory root and erythritol (an alchohol). (most stevia products have filler ingrediants since pure stevia is crazy sweet - 1 tsp = 2 cups sugar)

I don't like oatmeal, but blueberries, blueberries, blueberries! They're a "superfood" thats full of so my nutrients it's unreal. I hate to use a buzzword term like superfood, but that's really what they are.

Ok I'll ask this here instead of making a new thread.

I need to put on weight. I've been trying to increase my calorie intake but my weight keeps going down. I can't force down enough food/calories to make up for my bodies metabolism or the effects of my meds. Normally this isn't a problem, but since my dental surgery I haven't been able to eat anything that requires chewing. The clinic has been dragging their ass on getting my teeth replaced, it's coming but maybe not until January.

My doctor ran through some suggestions like to force down half a gallon of milk a day if not more, protein shakes and the like but the problem with liquids is that I metabolize them incredibly fast.

So I turn to you all: What would you do if you couldn't eat anything very solid and need to put on say....20 pounds, thereabouts. Or at least stop losing weight.
