To be fair the previous record only even existed because of the USAF testing new high altitude parachute systems (to coincide with the advent of jets).

It's cool to break a record but it only held for as long as it did because there was no reason to do it again.

My math is a little rusty but if 729 Mph is around 325.89 m/s wouldn't they need to determine the altitude he was at when he hit that velocity and check what the speed of sound is at that specific altitude? I know it's much lower the higher the altitude is.. I really do believe he broke Mach1

Shit, I think everyone was. You could really tell on his first couple of check items, took him a while to respond, and when he released his final bonds to the capsule. Man, fucking intense.
