I'm sure he easily broke the local sound barrier at high altitude where he'd be dropping the fastest (due to the lower air density) and the speed of sound would be at it's lowest.

By 15,000 feet it's already dropped by ~100 mph compared to sea level. While it doesn't decrease linearly with altitude I'd image it's still much, much lower by the time you get to 100k+ feet.
