Just got a text from my fiance, apparently the CEO of the small company she works for is threatening to fire their production department and ship the jobs overseas if Obama is reelected. This shit is getting way out of hand.

Our CEO basically said he won't tell us how to vote and left it at that.

I think the distinction between "I'll fire you if you vote for Obama" vs. "I'll fire you if Obama is elected" is enough to make it not voter intimidation.

Maybe from a legal standpoint, but it's still voter intimidation and it's completely unacceptable.

Generally voter intimidation is about trying to prevent people from voting (generally specific ethnic groups) - the voter rights act reads:

"No person … shall intimidate, threaten, or coerce … any person for voting or attempting to vote."

What these CEOs are doing is borderline but likely not explicitly threatening people with the intent of stopping them from voting, it's more trying to influence who they vote for, but given that voting itself is a secret ballot situation it doesn't really apply.

I'm not saying it's not shady, I just don't think it's illegal.

The problem is a citizen would have to have the money to get a lawyer good enough to convince a grand jury that it is illegal.

It is definitely illegal, there's just so much wiggle room that your average attorney won't bother.

I know a guy that works for Dutch Bros. Coffee. He said the franchise owner he works for directly told him not to vote or he would lose his job. It was one of those passive-aggressive "laugh while you say it" comments, but the threat was still there. He didn't even register to vote because he was uneducated on the matter and didn't know that his employer could not make threats like that without facing a legal shitstorm.

I wonder how many other companies or individuals out there are doing this same thing or something like it hoping that the people they are bullying don't know any better.

The closest it has come to anything like that in my workplace is my boss telling me weekly how much he dislikes Obama after meeting him at a fundraiser event in 2008 and sitting at his table all night. He repeats the story so often that it makes me think of my grandpa telling me for the 100th time about his "glory days".

It's not threatening, they're just giving warning. If obama is reelected, he's going to find employees that don't cost him so much.

Just to add, DBros almost exclusively hires high school and college age kids (somewhere in their employee handbook is a line that says they have to act like the customer is their best bro and totally wants him/her to go a party on friday and bone the other baristas) that if they vote at all, are likely to vote democratic, and virtually all of DBros' stands are in states that are almost assuredly going democratic anyway.

Kinda related, but waiting to see what my brother-in-law says. Lost his job of 18 years due to layoffs (though quick google search is showing revenue has increased every year for past 10 years). He is a die-hard republican, but am expecting to hear him say it is Obama's fault that he lost his job. I would love to tell him off if he says this and accepts unemployment and assistance, but I care too much about my sister and their 4 kids to raise the issue. At least my sister is saying maybe it will open his eyes and he will actually pay attention to what Romney is proposing.

What I still don't understand is what these CEOs think Obama can even do to force them to lay people off?

Raise the top or corporate tax rate? Require them to provide additional services to their employees? Introduce new regulations on how they must do business?

Oh wait, the President doesn't do any of those things.

Well, if the company has more than 50 full time employees, an Obama win will mean they will have to provide a health insurance plan to their workers, instead of just being no benefit, wage slave proprietors.

You see, that's the real problem here. Business in America has turned from "thanks for making us so much money" into "you make what we tell you to make and thanks for killing yourselves to make it".
