I'm a little uncertain if you know the difference between a job and community service. Have you ever held a position doing either?

I'd love to see more than your anecdotal bullshit on pell grant abuse. Saying a "majority" just collect a check and avoid school is the grossest overstatement that can be made. I have no idea what the numbers are, but I am 100% sure that 51% of people don't just go to school to collect $5,000 a year.

By the way, I don't know what backwoods school you counseled at, but academic probation and just "mailing it in" typically kills your financial aid eligibility. I have a hard time believing that people just mail it in and continue to collect checks. They have to actually participate. Maybe they get some ridiculous degrees like psychology that leads them to a position not even related to their field of study, but...

    ..hey, wait a minute...

But hey, let's assume you're even half right (you're not), lets just wipe that program and fuck over 75% of people relying on it to get a degree and become competitive in the workforce.

actually the Pell allowance is 5250 per year and the loan allowance is 21000 per year +/-. All told a person with an EFC of 0 can receive, at a school cost of 10k/year, 15000 roughly per year in "free" money. Most of the perpetrators go to online schools or community colleges.

I don't personally care if you "think it's true" as I've worked in the industry and watched it first hand. Seeing someone who has 40k in student loans and isn't even halfway to an associates degree via 8 different colleges is very depressing. And that is not an uncommon scenario.

I can't tell you how many student i've seen in the same situation of reaching their aggregate limit of undergraduate student loans 57,500$ and not even be close to an associates.

You don't have to believe me, or see more than my "anecdotal bullshit" because what I'm saying is true. Honestly I have zero reason or interest to lie to you. This is a fact. Most students on ground do not follow this mold. Most students online do. I think the last number I saw was something like 20% of all students in our country attended online and over 50% of them accounted for the defaulted loans. The reason of course...is people taking on loans to get their refund and NOT paying them back.

It's more than just pell, and it's seriously epidemic. Call any damn school and inquire seriously about it.

Tyche I've almost always respected what you say. But, in this case you have zero idea what you're talking about. Your academic eligibility at one school has nothing to do with your eligibility at another school and most schools have a 2-3 semester policy before you fail out. So you can go do school A for a few semesters and collect some money. Then, get kicked out and apply and go to another school without any penalty at all and collect more studnet loans etc...

There is no penalty at all, in any case, period, about the money you take from one school vs the next doesn't matter until you reach your aggregate limit.

Look this up before you respond, please.

I know students abuse loans, but those are loans and they're financially responsible. Pell grants, however are capped at about 5k a year. And you have to remain eligible and you have to complete your degree in a reasonable amount of time or they bump you off or make you file an appeal. I've been there. Done that. You cant abuse pell grants for too long before you lose your funding.

I'm the kid that's been to 4 different universities and been in school for 10 years. That person you described is me. If you transfer 60 credits to a school and you still don't have an associates degree, you get this nice letter saying "hey asshole, you have all these credits and not shit to show for it, no ore money". I have one of these letters laying around, I ca find it and scan it.

Also, FWIW, zero student loan debt. The inability to work while getting the doctorate will make up ground quickly.

Pell grants operate thus. For your undergraduate schooling you can receive up to 5250 per school year July1st until June 30th. The student responsibility is dependent on what school they go to. Students at a community college will profit off their pell + their student loans (if they want to) as if pell covers they won't automatically include loans. But they will if you ask/apply and qualify. If individuals apply for student loans (in keeping with what I said) these are not loans that can be written off by bankruptcy or any other means. These people will carry them through the entirety of their lives. These loans will be paid back by wage garnishes, social security garnishes or any other means and aren't even written off by death. Meaning no matter what these people who take loans inappropriately will pay for them, or their next of kin will.

Just to clarify, they are responsible for the loans until they aren't. Then they are the publics responsibility. And, Pell grants are funded by the public...it's not mythical dollars.

Just to clarify, the only person bringing up loans is you. If you looked at my very first post, you'd see I said "I agree, I've seen it", however the idea that pell grants are welfare and that some vast majority abuse it is complete bullshit.

Yes I brought up loans but I assure you if you go look at any number of community colleges you'll find the same thing for people using just the pell grant.

It's not limited to loans. Again, I assure you this is the case. Believe me or not, I've seen it firsthand.

Also, just to clarify, Obama is passing a law that will cap loan payments at 10% of discretionary income. Forgiven after 20 years (someone can correct me if I'm off on something, this is my on an iPad with no way to verify what the fuck I'm saying). Since you seem so passionate about the subject, I must have you a reason to vote for him.

But you can't abuse pell grants. You can't. You either become academically inelgible, you accumulate too many credits with no,degree, or you get a degree. Is there an option I'm missing?

So basically what Obama is saying is that you can pay a minimal amount towards the money you borrowed then after 20 years not have to pay anything at all? This seems rather ludicrous to me. But, is right in line with what I'd expect from Obama. Sounds like your average tax payer gets screwed in this one. Someone is paying for thees loans at some point. They don't just get dissolved.

Actually I've seen many people who lie about their previous education in order to receive more pell grants. You can do whatever the DoE allows you to do and unless you're an idiot you can get away with quite a lot. I have seen a large number of master degree students who shouldn't receive pell actually receive it...and then have to pay it back before they receive any forms of student aid, period.

Its for when dumbasses get psychology degrees that amount to nothing and they work for minimum wage (don't take the psych major jabs personally, I just have friends with psych degrees and they have rather interesting stories). Why should the government bankrupt you on student loans and still not be able to collect while at the same time demoting the individual they're trying to extract money from to a lifetime of poverty, which leads to further uses of entitlements like food stamps, section 8, Medicaid, etc? It then becomes a vicious circle.
