So thinking of geting a sports bike.

Alright so fiance and I broke up a couple weeks ago. Been wanting a crotch rocket for the past 5 years but between her and my parents was to much of a hassle to get one. So I have absolutely 0 clue about bikes, decent prices, what to look for ext, but now that I'm single and can do w/e the fuck i want decided that I want to get one. So basically what I'm asking for is advice on what to look for, decent price (prefer to be under 4k since my car will still be main source of transportation.) Wanting it just to have a good time on. I don't plan on being retarded and getting my self killed or speeding like a retard. Just something to maybe drive to/from work/class and have a good time with.

Read this whole thread. Not joking here.

If it's your first bike, shoot for between 500cc-700cc. It will have tons of go power despite what you probably thing.

I started out on a 97 Katana 600. You want to start out with a beater. You will drop your first bike. Everyone does it. You should also look into free classes from your local community college on how to ride. They were a huge help for me getting started. I wouldn't go with anything higher than 650cc for your first bike. It's small enough that you won't kill yourself trying to fly around but you'll still have enough pep to get a good amount of speed. After 11 years of riding I still only have a 650cc(Triumph Daytona, which is not a rice rocket btw despite it's appearance.) Never had the need for anything else. Obvious comment here but don't be a fucking donor, always wear a helmet. You could get a shitty Katana or something similar for a modest price(buddy of mine recently sold his 98 for 1,500.) It just depends. The problem you're going to have is that you're clueless about bikes. So if you look at a used bike you're going to have to take the seller's word for everything. You won't know if the bike sounds right just by firing it up etc. So if you have someone you know that is familiar with bikes, take them with you before purchasing the bike. Let them test drive it for you. About the best advice I can give you.

Oh and never slam on the brakes if you're going too fast in a turn, you will wipe out. Let off the gas and just try to coast and pray.

I know that feeling. Sometimes I feel like the posted speed limits for exits are too high. Which really sucks when cars behind ya usually start to take the turn at ten over posted.

The only other drivers that get to me are the ones that get right up on your shit like you're not even there. Hi mother fucker I'm the guy riding the bright yellow bike. Controlling it going over cinders in a hairpin turn is hard enough without you being two feet away from me.

Reminds me of the time that I was taking my bike on the highway for the first time. My fiance was behind me on her's and we were coming up on a 180 degree curve where the highway transitions into another one. I was taking the turn at about 30 which was the posted limit and she was about 15-20 feet behind me. Some guy in a truck pulls right up her ass and then tried to push between us by passing on the right.

Ugh. My wife and I try to stay fairly tight when we ride to specifically avoid situations like that. Can't even count how many unintentional stoppies I've had to pull after someone pulls in front of me and slams on the brakes.

Don't get anything bigger than a 600. I don't care if you are 7ft tall and 350lbs. The bigger bikes are not bigger.

Read it, thanks for the link? So far first thing i need to do is find a class and take it. From what the other thread said a Ninja 250r would be fairly cheep and good bike to learn on? ideally I wouldn't like to pay more than 2,500, the cheaper the better but really don't want something looking like a dirt bike lol. Plan on helmet/jacket/gloves and probably the boots but what is the purpose of the boots? also im 5'9-5'10 and 130 pounds lol (23 years old). Wont be doing any interstate riding or driving on any roads with speed limits higher than 65 (usually nothing higher than 45). Live in simi rural Alabama (oxford/Gadsden/jacksonville area). Roads are fairly strait for the most part and the ones i would be riding on are in good shape

Riding boots give ankle support / braces in ways that normal ones don't. It can possibly prevent a broken ankle in a wipe. a 250cc will be fine for getting around town or taking back roads between towns but I'd be skittish to take it on the highway with the way others drive.

What is the difference between say a Ninja 250R and a Ninja 500R? There is are only two stretches of road that are 65 and i rarely ride on them but would like the option to, while not having to much that im going to kill myself on. Also can anyone quote a average price for those two bikes (used of course) been trying to google it and seeing them vary anywhere between 1,200 and 5k. Trying to find classes and only about 3 available in Alabama.. the closest being about a 2-2 1/2 hour drive away costing $250

I thought he was talking about a bicycle

I don't even know why motor cycles are called bikes. There isn't a single "b" in there, lol.

Because they were originally Motorized Bicycles, which turned in to Motorbikes or Motorcycles. It seems like Motorcycles has won the naming war (at least everywhere I've ever lived), but people still refer to them as bikes.

So seems like a 250R is the best bet. Also what about storing them? How bad is it to store a beginners bike in the rain/cold? I could store it in a old house that is being used for storage but would be very inconvenient.

Just get a bike cover and a battery tender for when you don't ride it.

Acid pack battery needs a battery tender more than a glass mat one and I'd say to keep it temperate conditions if you get freezing weather at any points since my fiance's battery burst two seasons ago when she left it out all winter. I leave my bike out in the rain a lot because it often starts raining before it's cool enough to not melt parts of my cover and it's fine. Just keep an eye on rust in areas that probably shouldn't be rusting. It's common to find a very light coating on your rotors but don't worry since your brakes will clean them right up.

Coldest it ever gets here is like 24 and it's very very rare maybe 2-3 days a year if that. Didn't think of a cover I'll def get that but idk wtf a battery tender is lol but my dad use to ride before he had a bad accident he will Probally know. Thanks for the advice and what would I be looking at paying or a used ninja 250r?

yeah the term sports bike irked me, I didn't even know/am still not convinced anyone calls a motorcycle of any type a sports bike -- I stand corrected http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport_bike (I still don't have to like it!)
