Start with something small like a 600. Take the classes that are offered, and don't be cheap on your leather and helmet.

If the shit can save my life not gonna skip on it. Any suggestions on brands I should be looking at? Also how do people handle the boots? Of I ride to class/work really don't wanna ware them around. Do people usually just carry extras I. Their back packs?

Honda makes good bikes, I fucking love my CBR. It's a 1k though, I know the bigger bikes look nice but they're powerful, I can't stress enough how important it is to start on a small bike.

I ment brands on gear. I would love a nice ass bike but it will come in time.... I think I am pretty much set on a ninja 250r I like the looks seems cheep an something few people have recommended as a beginner bike

My entire equipment, and even the backpack, are Icons. A Canadian motorcycle shop was having an Icon blowout and gave free shipping for orders over $100. So I broke the bank that year lol. Good solid gear for the price. Though the advertised "water proof" boots aren't water proof at all. Backpack is nice a spacious with lots of pockets and it littered with reflective material so I'm a damn light beacon riding at night.

The only brand I would recommend staying away from is Frank Thomas stuff. They aren't necessarily bad, just over priced for what they are. You can find the equivalent Joe Rocket, Icon, Alpine Star etc.. for cheaper and usually better.

Having trouble finding any 250r around here that are used. Found a ninja 659 tat has been layed down for 2k and comes with helmet and jacket for 2k but it's blue and not really crazy over it. Would it be to much for a beginner?

It's more bike for sure yes. But if you take the classes and learn what you're doing 650 is very manageable for a beginner.

I had a bad habit of that in the class, luckily it was super light breaking, barely any leaning going on. I passed the MSF class like 3 weeks ago. Take the class, it will be fun

IDM taking the class at all and would actually like to its just a matter of finding one close to me that is practical to go to (cant afford to pay 250 for class + 300 in hotel bills)

Go to a shop that will let you try on shit, don't just buy random stuff on the net unless of course you've tried it on in store and found online for a cheaper price. A large helmet for you in the icon brand may mean you fit a medium helmet with the speed and strength brand.
And I don't know where you live, but I doubt you plan on riding in the winter, take your time getting stuff, piece by piece. The class I took provided helmets, eye protection if needed and gloves. They only required that we were long sleeves and sturdy shoes that covered the ankles (high top sneakers or boots)

The only reason I had a helmet, jacket and gloves ready for class is because I won $1k at the casino and splurged, but see what the class offers and what you actually need to bring for class

From what i can see the biggest reason not to ride in the winter is road conditions. Around here we have icy roads/slow maybe 4-5 days a year and its usually made into a big deal when it is going to happen. so I will most likely ride in the winter unless I just cant handle the cold.

My bike is a 650 and it's perfectly fine. The Versys 650 has the same engine as the Ninja 650 and it's really beginner friendly.

Avoid riding in the rain as well until you're more experienced. Avoid construction/paving as cinders will fuck your shit up.

Not usually much construction around where i live and i will be keeping my car for extreme heat/cold/ and rain. Anyone have suggestions about these two bikes im looking at?

I prefer the looks of the 250r by far but i plan on getting rid of it in a year or so once i know wtf im doing and wont kill myself.

I'd probably go with the 650R if there is no structural damage to the bike.

Just one more things to check though. The riding position of the bike.

I thought I wanted a Ninja also when I started looking around but check the riding position before getting the bank check / cash. I was really uncomfortable in the sport riding position.

I agree with Ragnus. Check out the 650R. Better bike, less money. Plus since you already know it's gone down once you won't stress if you lay it down a second time. If you go take a look at it check the molding for large long(couple of inches) cracks. With the natural vibrations from riding large cracks can get even bigger and on darker colored bikes they show up a lot more to the naked eye. Oh and buy a kickstand plate. In the summer asphalt gets soft. Your kickstand will sink in and get shit all over it which is nearly impossible to clean off. Always put the plate down before the kickstand.
