    Voter Registration Issue

Okay, no the Republicans are not preventing a friend of mine from voting. Not directly, anyway. Things with him, no matter how simple, are always 10x more complex than they need to be. We are

First! He is a naturalized citizen from Mexico. All legally completed and done. He is a citizen of the United States, entering through Idaho originally. He became a citizen just after Obama got elected (2008, early 2009). He was told at the time by his immigration officer that he would be unable to vote in the upcoming (2012, three years from then) elections because of some complicated issue with his immigration process. I'm unfamiliar with what the particular issue, and it seems he is too. I'm not a lawyer, but as far as I understand, that smells like BS to me. I don't understand why there would be some issue for him to not vote in an election 3+ years after he becomes a citizen.

Second! My friend lives in Washington State, and has for a couple of years. He owns two cars, one registered in Washington and one in Idaho. His driver's license is still in Idaho. His Washington car, the one he normally drives, is a random Honda POS. His Idaho car is a modified sports car that will not pass Washington emissions and thus cannot be registered in Washington state. That is why his license is still in Idaho. Yes, he should've changed it awhile ago. However, he thinks that because he has a vehicle registered in Idaho, he cannot get his residency sorted (and/or his license) and register to vote in Idaho. Is there really some block on voting/getting a license because you have a vehicle registered in another state?

I assume he gets a utility bill at his place in Washington with his name on it?

Actually, if he hasn't registered by now, he's probably fucked for this election - in Washington you have to register 4 weeks before an election:

Actually that's only for web or mail registration, he can register in person by Oct 29th. I can't find out what documentation he will need to bring with him to register at his local county election office. He will probably need at least a utility bill or something of that sort with his name and current address on it, but I can't figure out if he'll need a state ID or not. Either way, if he has a driver's license, he should go ahead and get one for the state of Washington. Doing so shouldn't affect his car registration for his Oregon car - license to drive is independent of car registration.

tl;dr tell him to go to his county election office and see what he needs to register.

Pretty much what I already told him, including the "by the 29th". The above problems were his excuses. Told him utility bill, and a couple forms of ID and he should be fine, unless there really are problems. I just couldn't find anything on any of it being a problem.

I have a friend that became a citizen right before the previous election. His citizen was granted the day after the deadline to register in Virginia. He was able to register for the next election (2012) the next day after getting his citizenship.

    I smell bullshit.

The US does not have any kind of limited citizenship.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

You know, you should see if he can register to vote through the Idaho website. When I registered for Cali I did it online and the only ID it really asked for was my driver's license number. It even used my electronic signature from the DMV for my registration signature. There was an option to click if you wanted to vote via mail (which I'd imagine your friend would have to do if he lives in Washington).
