Speaking of, was anyone else... underwhelmed by that interview? I had thought given the setting the President would act a bit more... organic. But with the election three weeks away perhaps that was expecting over much.

I was kind of surprised the wiretapping question was asked.

So apparently according to Romney's internal polling (ie right wing blogosphere) he is leading in PA right now and expects to win it. That must be why he hasn't sunk a single penny into the state since May. I also found it interesting that nearly everyone that comments on those blogs is 100% confident that Romney will win the EC in a landslide. There are no words......

Not only the voter ID laws but the campaigns of voter suppression and intimidation that've been getting attention recently give me so much fucking anxiety. Well, the uninformed voter of this election cycle has been one that's been bred over decades since McCarthy fear mongering. Everything the Repubs are doing is purposeful and frankly brilliant. They've gotten to the point where they can say what they want and get away with it because their voter base believes that anything the Democrats / Liberals hate or rail against must be the right thing for the country. Hell, I saw some comments on a political article about Democratic voters changing to Republican and someone said that they felt the Republicans were the party that best respects citizens' privacies and ways of life through small government and deregulation.

I know many people who used to be Republicans before the Tea Party hijack and I wouldn't be surprised if they were seen as party traitors.

Remember, Obama is sitting pretty electorally. There has to be some major multi-state collusion going on to counter Romney malaise.

The other scenario is that Obama's job and economic performance will catch up to him, commits a major gaffe, and voter short-term memory loss will put Romney in the white house with a swing state sweep. Even then, it's highly unlikely considering how competitive democrats are in the senate (republicans were expected to take the senate just two months ago) as well as extremely shitty republican senate candidates are turning out to be (Indiana and Arizona are competitive, Missouri, Florida, and Virginia are likely retains, Massachusetts looks like a flip).

I'm reasonably confident at this point in time. But it's still important to vote anyway.

I'm "reasonably confident" too, but I realize we are one downturn/gaffe/debate loss/shitty jobs report away from a Romney EC lead. I like to think that the first debate swung all the actual "swing" voters that were out there and basically there's enough of a wall left to support Obama to a second term, but that's about all I can hope for.

Kerry wasn't without his own faults, and there are many parallels to be drawn between his campaign and Romney's. "Anyone but X" only works if X is universally, unquestionably and unequivocally reviled, which neither Bush II nor Obama are. Or at least, they're not hated by a large numbers of people all for the same reasons. Which is why using the logic "50% of the people hate X, so X can't succeed" is flawed.

While they both have a large group of people loath, not just hate them is a truth; those groups are neither the total majority nor unified in their hatred.

For Bush the hatred was almost universal, but he wasn't disliked as a person. (I posted something about this in the locked thread). Kerry came across as an affluent, self absorbed, bourgeois son of a bitch who couldn't relate to the average American if he spent half his fortune trying. (Sound like anyone in the current race?)

For all that the right has tried to villify Obama he is in the same vein as Bush. The difference of course, is race. There are a large faction of people who 'hate' him because they are racists. The hate for Obama has bite, but no substance. Romney can't dare tap into that hatred the way Bush did with the gays. That's where Obama has been brilliant during the campaign. He keeps painting himself as human. He's always talking about his daughters, and his belief in the American people. Romney said he doesn't care about half the country.

TL;DR people don't hate Obama as much as you think;
For Bush II it was for starting 2 wars, failing to prevent 9/11 and/or ignorance and bigotry (gay rights) as a tool for voter turn out. For Obama its because he's black and everyone is still pissed off the country is in a hole; lots of people can't see past the black guy to the one's holding the shovels.

As a resident of the rest of the US, watching him remain competitive despite the shit he has said is less than satisfying. Committee of Science, Space, and Technology member right there.

The last debate is one that Romney will have an incredibly difficult time winning, so I'm cautiously optimistic that we won't see another flop by Obama there. Once this is over, it's just a matter of surviving the grind and protecting Ohio and Wisonsin. If he wins those, the chances of a Romney victory are slim to none. Still, the national numbers worry me because they don't reconcile with the state numbers much at all. But the state polling is much more extensive, so that's what I'll trust. It may just be that Romney has such a huge advantage in states that don't matter that we may see bush v gore redux, minus the recount hopefully.

I'm kinda hoping that Romney wins Ohio just because Tagg's investments in the voting machine company there will probably call into question Mitt's win if he does pull it off. Then again that may not happen because the R's and their supporters are still screaming about the horrors of voter fraud despite them being the most blatant source of it in this election so far.

It's a good thing there's not a massive level of blatant election rigging going on pretty much everywhere, and especially that we can be confident that a U.S. presidential election could never be cheated and allow a devastatingly awful president into office clearly against the will of the voters.
