you can also use difference of squares and stuff like that to multiply things in your head.

eg a²-b²=(a+b)(a-b)

so 83 x 77 = (80+3)(80-3)=(80²-3²)=6400-9=6391

i used easy numbers, but it still applies lol

My sister's kid came home with math homework that the teacher wanted done that way. After five minutes of her, her husband, and me staring at it, we finally figured out wtf the teacher wanted. And then we wondered why the kid needed like half a sheet of paper per problem to draw the answer to a basic math problem instead of just multiplying normally.
